Skoda: First Look at Superb and Kodiaq

In addition to the new electric models, Skoda Auto also presented the Superb and Kodiaq – not as colorful monoliths, but as silhouettes. Both will come as plug-in hybrids and are set to premiere in 2023.

During the 'Let’s Explore' event, the Czech automobile manufacturer presented the first official silhouette images of the new vehicle generations. Kodiaq and Superb will be available with both petrol and diesel engines, as well as plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid versions. Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer commented:

“Superb and Kodiaq are two important pillars of our Skoda model portfolio. Therefore, the introduction of the new generations of both vehicles this coming autumn is of great significance to us. The Superb is the flagship of our model range with combustion engines and will set new standards in terms of comfort and space with its fourth generation – both as a sedan and as a station wagon. The second generation of the Kodiaq will bring the themes of safety, technology, and versatility to a new level. We want to offer the best of both worlds and meet our customers’ desires, hence both models will also be available as plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid variants.”

With the new models, Skoda is also evolving the design: chrome will be almost completely eliminated – and in contrast to the electric models, the combustion cars will remain loyal to the logo with the winged arrow on the hood – albeit in a more discreet matte design. Additionally, there will of course be new features and improved technologies. The fourth generation of the Superb will be available as a sedan and as a station wagon, just like its predecessor.

The Superb will be built together with the VW Passat in Bratislava

The production of the Superb will move to the Slovakian plant in Bratislava, along with the very similar Passat, which will only come as a Variant and was co-developed by Skoda. In contrast, the assembly of the new Kodiaq generation will remain, like its predecessor, in the Czech Skoda plant in Kvasiny.

What does this mean?

In addition to new electric vehicles, Skoda is also further developing its existing lineup. The Superb and Kodiaq are important high-volume models for the brand: As top models, they bring strong margins and are popular in the upper mid-range segment. By April 2023, over 770,000 units of the third-generation Superb had been delivered to customers, and over 740,000 Kodiaqs were sold. However, they are sticking to combustion engines and plug-in hybrids for now – although Skoda will also introduce electric models for both from 2026: a 4.6-meter long dynamic wagon and a 4.9-meter long, seven-seater SUV.
