Sixt Share Survey: Shared Electric Cars Increasingly Popular

A third of the respondents prefer to take the bicycle, but when it comes to transport or trips, a shared car is acceptable - preferably electric. E-scooters are mostly used for fun.

The Sixt Share division of the Munich-based car rental company conducted a survey on sustainable lifestyle and mobility in the three major cities of Munich, Hamburg, and Berlin, and sees the sharing concept with electric cars on the rise. The rental company wanted to know which sustainable modes of transportation are being used today and compiled the results in a white paper with the programmatic title "Gaining Momentum Towards a Transportation Transition: A Study on Green Mobility and Sustainable Transportation." The study aims to provide insights into the public's current stance on various modes of transportation.

"Sustainability, climate neutrality, and environmentally friendly mobility are more urgent than ever before. For this reason, many people strive for a sustainable lifestyle in their daily lives. Fortunately, thanks to the latest developments, there are numerous ways to make living, eating, and mobility more eco-friendly. A transportation transition with a focus on Green Mobility is considered an important step towards climate neutrality," outlines the provider.

One-third prefer cycling

Almost all respondents found it important to protect the environment. Most participants try to implement a sustainable lifestyle by avoiding plastic: more than half cite this measure. For an eco-friendly mode of transportation, over a third use a bicycle. This ranks third overall among the most frequently used means of transportation. Following closely are e-scooters, e-mopeds, and car-sharing services.

Transport or Joyride: Reasons for Sharing

The reasons for using sharing offers are varied. Overall, getting home safely at night tops the list by a wide margin over other factors. Sharing offers are most frequently used during leisure time: meeting friends, a joyride, and a weekend excursion are common responses. This is especially the case with E-scooters: more than half of the respondents stated that they use E-scooters for fun.

For car-sharing, practical reasons were more in the foreground: the offers are primarily used to reach difficult destinations and to get from A to B faster. Car-sharing offers also prove useful as a means of transport during a move or for large purchases. Therefore, more than half of the respondents consider the model important when it comes to car-sharing offers. Reasons for this include greater comfort and a more pleasant driving experience.

Electric Cars are in Demand

Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular. Participants who have not yet had the opportunity to drive a car with an electric motor often said they would like to change that. Many would take this opportunity with car-sharing and prefer the electric car to a car with a combustion engine. This is particularly popular among the younger and older respondents.

The online survey collected feedback from 600 respondents about their attitudes and habits regarding environmental protection and green mobility. The survey was conducted with participants aged 14 to 99 to ensure a broader sample. All respondents were divided into seven age groups: 14-17 years, 18-24 years, 25-34 years, 35-44 years, 45-54 years, 55-64 years, and 65-99 years, with the group of 25 to 34-year-olds being the most represented. To obtain the most accurate representation possible, only people from the three German cities of Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich were surveyed.
