Shell: New Hydrogen Solution for Heavy-Duty Truck Transport

On August 1, Shell officially launched its new platform Shell Hydrogen Pay-Per-Use in Germany. According to their own information, this offers fleet operators the possibility to lease a hydrogen truck including all necessary services and amenities for a monthly fee, thereby allowing them to assess a potential switch to hydrogen-powered trucks with lower investments, complexity, and risks.

“We are driving progress by collaborating with customers to build a hydrogen economy and accelerate the energy transition towards net-zero emissions,” says Andreas Janssen, Hydrogen Mobility Commercial Manager Europe.

“Hydrogen-powered trucks can reduce carbon emissions since their exhaust emissions consist only of water vapor. Depending on the truck model, the range is up to 450 kilometers and refueling takes 15 minutes.”

Especially in road freight transport, there is still a long way to go, as it is not clear which technological solution will ultimately prevail. Therefore, it is important for us to pursue a technology-neutral approach and gather as much experience as possible. Shell's 'pay per use' solution makes it easy and convenient for companies to access new transport concepts without high entry costs. It takes innovative approaches and joint efforts like these to pave the way for new technologies and solutions," says Michael Lohmeier, Head of the Clean OPS Technology Center at DHL Group, which will use two of the hydrogen trucks under the offer.
