Shanghai Motor Show 2023: Maserati Grecale Folgore celebrates world premiere
Electrification will play a key role in Maserati's future strategy. This includes the commitment to produce electric versions of all series by 2025 and exclusively all-electric vehicles by 2030. The Gran Turismo Folgore will soon be joined by the Grecale Folgore, which is expected to bring 'mass volume' for the brand with the trident. Davide Grasso, CEO of Maserati S.p.A., commented in a florid Italian manner:
“It is a decisive moment for the Maserati brand. Today we are in China at the Shanghai Auto Show and we are at the cosmopolitan Milan Design Week in Italy. We are celebrating the future all over the world: It is a new beginning for the brand. And we are celebrating Folgore, the electrification plan that has become a reality and is now ready to pave the way into this revolutionary era. I am very pleased to be here in Shanghai because it is not only an international exhibition but also a global platform for innovation and the ideal place to present the first electric models in Maserati's history.”
Regarding the data, Maserati remains reticent: the battery capacity is said to be up to 105 kWh, but unlike the Gran Turismo, it is still content with a 400-volt architecture. There are rumors of up to 400 kW (544 hp) and about 800 Newton meters of torque. There are also no exact details on range and charging times yet - the car is still undergoing homologation.
The prices will be oriented around the approximately electric Porsche Macan, but should still be below the Levante, which starts at 80,000 euros gross. Those who estimate around 70,000 euros plus-minus x for the base might not be far off. Delivery could potentially happen by the end of 2023.
The Grecale Folgore is likely to be the electric volume driver for Maserati worldwide. Since it is still based on the older "Giorgio platform," which also underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulia/Tonale or Jeep Grand Cherokee, it will have to "make do" with 400-volt architecture, while the GT already features 800 volts.
What does that mean?
The Grecale Folgore is an important car for Maserati and Stellantis – it needs to drive volumes and bridge the gap from combustion engines to electric in the SUV segment. It also needs to try to convince Chinese customers of European premium products.
