The Dutch Royal Schiphol Group has ambitious climate protection goals: by 2030, their airports are to be operated completely emission-free. To achieve this goal, the airport operator is focusing, among other things, on creating an emission-free ground operation on runways and has now ordered 52 electric buses from MAN. The Lion’s City 12 E will transport travelers and crews from the terminals of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to their planes before departure or pick them up from the aircraft after landing starting next year.

Intelligent space concept guarantees quick entry and exit

Schiphol has decided on electric buses from MAN Truck & Bus after an extensive tender process. The Lion's City E convinced mainly with its space, efficiency, range, and reliability.

MAN Bus Marketing Manager Heinz Kiess: “Thanks to the intelligent space concept, up to 107 passengers can fit in our 12-meter solo bus.”

To transport as many travelers as possible, the electric buses for Schiphol Airport are equipped with few seats. In return, they offer a maximum of standing spaces for passengers with hand luggage.

Schiphol has relied on e-buses for ten years

For ten years now, Schiphol has been operating an all-electric bus fleet, making it one of the first airports in the Netherlands to embrace e-mobility. With the new generation of electric buses from MAN, the airport aims to make a significant step forward in passenger comfort while continuing to ensure the highest reliability.

"In the coming years, bus transport will gain importance, among other things, due to increasingly larger aircraft. Innovative and sustainable vehicles are therefore even more important to us," says Sybren Hahn, Executive Director Infrastructure Schiphol.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is the fourth largest airport in Europe, with over 60 million passengers.

Other airports ordered MAN e-buses

As early as the beginning of 2023, Cologne Bonn Airport took delivery of all-electric buses from MAN. Recently, Munich Airport also ordered 49 MAN e-buses, with an option for an additional 25 vehicles.
