Schaeffler starts production of electric motors and sees itself on a good path

Supplier aims to showcase a broad portfolio in e-mobility, from components to drive systems, even through targeted acquisitions. Recently, the company has also been active in the heavy-duty segment.

After establishing its own business division three years ago at the beginning of 2018, the Franconian supplier and technology group Schaeffler has drawn a positive interim balance on its involvement in e-mobility and sees "significant successes." Numerous series nominations across all degrees of electrification demonstrate that the company is operating successfully in e-mobility, say the Herzogenaurach-based firm.

“We have successfully transformed into a drive supplier in the field of sustainable e-mobility and established ourselves as a reliable partner for our customers. We have been engaged in e-mobility for more than 20 years and understand the drivetrain,” proclaims Matthias Zink, Board Member for Automotive Technologies at Schaeffler AG.

According to the company, it is distinguished primarily by its know-how at the component and system level. Through targeted strategic acquisitions, the company has been able to gradually expand its competencies in e-mobility, sums up the supplier. Since the acquisition of Elmotec-Statomat at the end of 2018 and the associated expertise in winding technology, the entire industrialization of e-motors can be depicted within the company. With Compact Dynamics, an innovation specialist in the field of electric drive concepts was acquired as early as 2016. Furthermore, the company points to the Schaeffler Paravan Technology joint venture with the developed steer-by-wire system Space Drive, which the Franconians see as a key technology for autonomous driving.

All-wheel drive for Audi: E-axle drives in series since 2017

The E-axle gearboxes, as an essential component of entire E-axle systems, have been in series production since 2017. They are intended to ensure optimal translation and power transmission from the electric motor to the wheels. The range of applications is broad. In the Audi e-tron, for example, E-axle gearboxes in different designs are used on both axles for all-wheel drive. In the Porsche Taycan, a reportedly very efficient coaxial E-axle gearbox is delivered, which ensures the correct translation on the front axle. In the meantime, orders have been won for complete so-called 3in1 E-axles, which combine E-motor, gearbox, and power electronics into one system. These performance E-axles offer a "trailblazing power density," according to the supplier.

E-motors: series production begins

This year, the company also plans to start series production of E-motors for hybrid modules, hybrid gearboxes, and purely electric axle drives. The basis for this is a modular and integrated technology platform. A key element is seen in Schaeffler's manufacturing and technology expertise across all components of electric drive systems, to economically industrialize technically leading products. In addition to various series orders for E-motors in the passenger car sector, the company points to another milestone in recent times: entry into the market segment for heavy-duty applications in the truck sector, where a series order for E-motors with wave winding technology has already been reported. These units are said to offer advantages in assembly and high power density.

Special hybrid gearboxes receive record order

For dedicated hybrid gearboxes, the Franconians received a record order as already communicated. Starting in 2024, the company will deliver an entire drive unit with two E-motors and integrated power electronics in the gearbox. With a system output of 120 kW, sporty driving performance with low fuel consumption should be possible, according to the promise.

"We are on a very good path. With our modular product portfolio, we are able to offer every customer tailored series solutions," says Jochen Schröder, head of the E-Mobility business unit.
