Schaeffler China: Compact 2-in-1 E-Axle Goes into Production
The Herzogenaurach-based automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler celebrated the production start of the 2in1 electric axles at its manufacturing plant in Taicang, China. This involves an e-axle system consisting of an e-motor and gearbox. The production start marks another milestone in the e-mobility business, according to the supplier. Schaeffler's 2in1 e-axle is an electric drive solution in the e-axle systems product portfolio. This system integrates the reduction gearbox and electric motor into a compact unit. The provider advertises a high torque density in compact dimensions, as well as high system efficiency and low noise levels.
“Schaeffler aims to lead in innovation in e-mobility. The series production of our 2in1 e-axles has strengthened our positioning in this market," explained Jochen Schröder, head of the e-mobility division at Schaeffler.
With a modular design, the system can also meet various requirements and be used for different vehicle platforms. The first Chinese car model equipped with this product is expected to be launched soon. Following the market launch in China, the system is to be employed by a European vehicle manufacturer.
E-mobility continues to grow: Three billion euros in orders
Following the establishment of its own division in early 2018, the supplier sees itself on track in terms of e-mobility and points to numerous serial nominations across all levels of electrification. In 2020, the supplier recorded incoming orders worth 2.7 billion euros in the e-mobility division. The number of projects was 30 percent above the previous year and continues to rise this year. In 2021, series production of e-motors for hybrid modules, hybrid transmissions, and purely electric axle drives will begin. China is one of the most important markets for the Franconians. In 2018, production of the world's first P2 hybrid module started in Taicang, and in 2019, production of the two-speed electric axle began in Taicang.
