Samsara announces the worldwide availability of its new fatigue detection feature. Samsara's AI-powered technology detects signs of fatigue and can intervene in a timely manner to prevent accidents.

It uses AI models that have been trained on Samsara's extensive data sets to accurately capture symptoms of fatigue and immediately trigger an audible alarm in the driver's cabin. At the same time, fleet managers receive notifications via SMS or email to respond appropriately to the situation.

According to the European Road Safety Authority, fatigue is a cause of about 15 to 20 percent of serious road traffic accidents. The German Road Safety Council (DVR) also highlights that professional drivers, in particular, are at higher risk due to long working hours and irregular shifts.

Samsara's fatigue detection addresses this issue by recognizing safety-relevant behaviors such as head nodding, irregular sitting, prolonged blinking, yawning, and rubbing the eyes. Yawning alone is often not enough to accurately determine fatigue.

In fact, an analysis among early users of the fatigue detection showed that about 77 percent of fatigue events were detected by behaviors other than just yawning. The precise alerts enabled by this technology offer significant potential for accident prevention.

“Detecting fatigue is a major technical challenge, as fatigue is not solely defined by behaviors like yawning or closed eyes,” explains Evan Welbourne, Vice President of AI and Data at Samsara. “Thanks to our extensive data pool of over 38 billion minutes of video footage, we can train AI models with high accuracy to provide our customers with decisive advantages.”

Video-based Safety Solutions Prevent Accidents

Since the first announcement of fatigue detection at Samsara's Beyond conference in June, customers have already seen significant improvements, including a major oilfield service company where fatigue incidents have significantly decreased.

Samsara collects over 10 trillion data points annually in a petabyte-sized dataset. They use this data to train AI models that automate workflows, accelerate time to value, and provide personalized, actionable insights for customers. In just one year, Samsara's video-based safety solutions have helped prevent over 200,000 accidents for customers worldwide.

The new fatigue detection feature is now available worldwide for customers. For more information, visit: https://www.samsara.com/products/safety/dash-cam.
