By 2035, the bus fleet of Rostocker Straßenbahn AG (RSAG) is set to become completely emission-free – starting now with two Iveco E-Way buses. The 12-meter-long low-floor solo buses have been in operation since September 7 and connect the town center of the Rostock district Warnemünde with Diedrichshagen and the S-Bahn.

Details

The two electric Iveco buses are real eye-catchers inside and out with their striking blue design and are equipped with 35 seats and about 38 standing places each. The flooring is designed to look like laminate.

Both Iveco E-Way buses feature a kneeling function on the door side. At the second door, there is a multifunctional area for passengers with limited mobility, accessible via a folding ramp. Double TFT monitors provide passengers with necessary travel information. Video surveillance, ticket machines, USB charging ports, and turning assistants are also on board.

Charging and Range

According to RSAG, the Iveco E-Way solo buses have a range of 210 km. The six batteries are installed on the roof (four) and at the rear (two). The two electric buses are charged overnight via cable at the RSAG bus depot in Rostock-Schmarl. For this purpose, RSAG states that two ABB charging stations with a charging capacity of 55 KW each have been installed.

Financing

The costs for the electric duo amount to around 1.1 million euros. Rostocker Straßenbahn AG receives funding of 635,441 euros from the program of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). In collaboration with Verkehrsgesellschaft Ludwigslust-Parchim mbH, the project for climate protection, air pollutant and noise reduction in urban and regional transport in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been launched in recent months.

By the end of 2022, 47 battery-powered standard low-floor buses are to be procured and the corresponding charging infrastructure installed at the depots. Synergy effects are expected by both transportation companies through mutual knowledge gain.

In addition to the daily use of the electric buses in regular service, this includes the use of the charging technology including the power supply, as well as experience in training staff and reorganizing internal operational processes.

In the electrification of buses in urban and regional transport, the two consortium partners RSAG and Verkehrsgesellschaft Ludwigslust-Parchim mbH aim to take on a pioneering role according to their own reports. Acquired know-how is to be passed on to interested transport companies.
