The US electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive has now announced that it intends to distribute its fully electric Commercial Van not only to Amazon but also to other customers. This offers customers worldwide the opportunity to electrify their delivery fleets with a modern vehicle and thus further reduce CO2 emissions, the company promoted. The Rivian Commercial Van is the platform on which Amazon's custom-built electric delivery van is based and was developed from the ground up with an emphasis on safety, driver comfort, and sustainability. Safety features include automatic emergency braking, collision warnings, and 360-degree visibility.

"Rivian and Amazon share the mission to decarbonize the last mile of delivery and have been working together since 2019 to make this a reality. We have always said that we want others to benefit from their technology in the long term, because more electric delivery vehicles on the road are good for our communities and our planet," said Udit Madan, Vice President of Transportation at Amazon.

With the two available vehicle sizes, the delivery vans have a payload of up to 1,240 kilograms (2,734 lb) and a gross vehicle weight of up to 4.3 tons (9,500 lb). The in-house software stack of the Americans plays a central role and controls almost all functions, from unlocking the vehicle and opening the door to charging and accelerating. In the commercial sector, this enables easy access to important fleet information - including real-time data and remote control, driver and vehicle information, alerts, and analytics. With these tools, the aim is to streamline fleet operations and minimize costs, while simultaneously enhancing safety and productivity.

"Amazon is and will remain an important partner for us, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the Amazon team as we help them achieve their climate goals. We are excited to open the sale of our electric commercial vehicle to more companies. About a quarter of CO2 emissions in the transportation sector in the U.S. come from commercial vehicles, so we need to do everything we can to reduce emissions as quickly as possible," says RJ Scaringe, CEO of Rivian.
