Rewe relies on charging stations from Allego

Rewe Nord is installing fast-charging stations in the parking lots of their stores. Customers can already use the first charging stations at the Walsrode and Hilter branches.

The retail sector is also accounting for the electrification of traffic: Over 20 charging stations will soon be available at various Rewe locations in the North. Under the fast-E pilot project, the expansion of an infrastructure for E-charging stations in Germany is being promoted, and Rewe is simultaneously gaining insights into the use of E-charging stations. fast-E is accompanied by four studies that, among other things, examine business models for the operation of charging stations. The project is made possible through collaboration with the charging infrastructure operator Allego and through EU funding.

Allego operates one of the largest networks of charging stations in Germany and Europe and is a leader in implementing fast-E. To accommodate the increasing number of electric vehicles, a demand-oriented charging infrastructure must be built as quickly as possible. The key factor for on-the-go charging is speed. Accordingly, "recharging" at an Allego E-charging station takes about 25 minutes, depending on battery capacity. During the charging time, customers can primarily utilize the offerings in the Rewe store. The environment also benefits: only green electricity goes into the E-car at the fast-charging stations operated by Allego.

Allego, based in Berlin and Erkrath, works with open standards and supports all major charging cards and access apps as well as contract-free payment by credit card. The charging stations are available to all customers and for every type of E-vehicle. The fast-E project aims to ensure that drivers of electric vehicles in Germany can easily use all charging stations. fast-E will establish multi-standard fast chargers along the main traffic routes at intervals of no more than 70 to 80 kilometers.

The charging stations are technically monitored and maintained by Allego, ensuring a 24-hour service for users daily. Under the fast-E initiative, 125 charging stations have already been installed in Germany. A total of 241 fast-charging stations are planned in this country, 37 in Belgium, and 29 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The installed fast-charging stations are compatible with three different plug types, allowing two vehicles to be charged simultaneously.

What does this mean?

The retail sector is also participating in the construction of the charging infrastructure and is offering a welcome opportunity to "recharge" while shopping with fast chargers—making it a future competitor to gas stations, which have themselves greatly benefited from the expansion of the retail sector in recent years.
