Starting in 2023, Renault Trucks will offer a fully electric range for each of its market segments – distribution, construction, and long-distance transport. The company aims to achieve this with various departments, all specializing in electromobility. Along with its announcement, the truck manufacturer reaffirms its commitment to transport without fossil fuels and states that it is dedicated to changing the truck market. This change will gradually lead to a CO2-neutral vehicle fleet within 30 years through electrification. Since trucks have a lifespan of at least ten years, the manufacturer states that all trucks it puts on the market from 2040 onwards will be powered without fossil fuels. Essential for achieving the transition to decarbonized transport are electric drives with batteries and fuel cells.

Series production of the second generation of electric vehicles had already started in March 2020 at the Blainville-sur-Orne plant. With vehicles ranging in weight class between 3.1 and 26 tons, the manufacturer can already refer to an extensive range. With the models Renault Trucks D Z.E., D Wide Z.E., and Renault Trucks Master Z.E., it offers solutions for the requirements of urban, delivery, and distribution transport as well as for waste collection.

Electric Vehicles for Every Application

The manufacturer has now announced to the press that it intends to extend electrification to all application areas. A Z.E. semi-trailer truck, which meets the requirements of regional and long-distance traffic, is to be launched in 2023. At the same time, there will be a fully electric offer adapted to urban construction. The French manufacturer is announcing long-distance e-trucks for the second half of the decade, relying on fuel cell technology.

Electromobility is the cornerstone of the company's strategy. The aim is to be at the forefront of the market, explains Bruno Blin, President of Renault Trucks.

“We are aiming for a 35 percent share of electric vehicles by 2030. By 2040, all our vehicle ranges will be powered 100 percent without fossil fuels.”

In order to achieve these self-imposed goals, Renault Trucks relies on specialized departments in the areas of research and development as well as sales and after-sales. Strategic partnerships are expected to help with the technological challenges of this “revolution.” Additionally, the manufacturer hopes to gain some advantages in research and development from synergies within the Volvo Group.

Dedicated Department for Marketing

To market the Z.E. range and support customers, Renault Trucks has formed a new business unit for electromobility projects. The team is working on developing partnerships with all stakeholders – including transport companies, distribution traffic, authorities, and energy suppliers – to bring smart, competitive electric offers to the market.

Services related to the electric vehicle will be integrated into the vehicle offer whenever possible. Renault wants to make it easier for its customers to find the solution that suits them. The manufacturer also wants to make it easier for its customers to switch to e-trucks by offering a complete transport package in addition to the vehicle, which includes batteries, solutions for installing charging infrastructure at customers’ sites, optimizing the energy used, repair and maintenance, financing, and insurance.
