Renault Trucks electrifies its heavy-duty range

The French flagship follows its sister Volvo and rolls out as an electric variant - for heavy construction traffic with solo trucks and as a tractor-trailer in regional long-distance traffic. However, not until 2023.

Renault Trucks has announced an expansion of its electric portfolio and plans to launch two new models with up to 44 tons GVW in 2023. The T E-Tech for regional freight transport and the Renault Trucks C E-Tech for the construction industry are set to be introduced as fully electric variants, similar to what the sister brand Volvo Trucks has already done with its heavy-duty models. Since 2020, the manufacturer has been marketing electric trucks produced in France with total weights ranging from 3.1 to 26 tons. The new models will feature two or three electric motors with a total output of up to 490 kW (666 hp) and an Optidriver transmission. Energy-wise, there will be a choice of two to six lithium-ion battery packs, with a capacity ranging from 180 to 540 kWh. The vehicle batteries can be charged in 9.5 hours with alternating current up to 43 kW and in 2.5 hours with direct current up to 250 kW. The range on a single charge is up to 300 km and can be extended to 500 km with an additional one-hour fast charge at 250 kW.

Five axle configurations and three auxiliary drives

The models can be equipped with three different types of auxiliary drives (PTO) and are designed to be adaptable for any type of structure and application: electric, electromechanical, or via the transmission. The permissible total weight is 44 tons. Various versions are available as 4x2 and 6x2 tractor units as well as 4x2, 6x2, and 8x4 tridem vehicles. The production of Renault Trucks T and C E-Tech takes place at the Renault Trucks plant in Bourg-en-Bresse, France. Sales are expected to start in the first quarter of 2023. With the expanded electric range and the comprehensive E-Tech offering, the manufacturer underscores its e-mobility strategy and goals. The plan is to achieve 50 percent of sales with electric vehicles by 2030.
