The French commercial vehicle manufacturer Renault Trucks and the logistics service provider Geodis are working together on a truck specialized for urban logistics. According to Geodis, the fully electric 16-ton vehicle will be introduced to the market at a price comparable to that of a diesel vehicle. Under the project name "Oxygen," the goal is to create not only an emission-free but also a particularly safe delivery vehicle. Active and passive safety systems are designed to pay special attention to vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.

In the current, still early project phase, the following important features have been identified, according to Geodis:

  • A lowered cabin is intended to improve the driver's view of the road. A wide windshield and multiple cameras instead of rearview mirrors provide additional all-round visibility.
  • The low cabin height is designed to make entering and exiting the vehicle easier.
  • A sliding door on the passenger side is intended to improve access in confined spaces.
  • Collaboration with a body manufacturer is intended to facilitate loading and unloading capabilities in urban environments.
  • Integrated connectivity services are intended to optimize delivery routes.

A prototype of the truck is scheduled for the end of 2022. It will be produced by Renault Trucks at its factory in Blainville-sur-Orne, France. The vehicle is set to begin test operations in Paris starting in 2023. Following this test phase, another adaptation phase will follow, it is said.
