Renault: Electric Twingo is once again coming from Slovenia
The Slovenian plant in Novo Mesto has long been part of Renault's network of factories – it also builds the current Twingo. And it is likely to remain with the plant as an electric version: According to the latest letter of intent, Renault also plans to assemble the electric Twingo there and is planning an annual production of 150,000 vehicles.
Slovenia wants to support Renault to maintain the location
After talks with Renault, the Slovenian government announced its intention to support the investment to secure the future of the Revoz plant in Novo Mesto. This step is not only intended to secure Slovenia's future as an automobile manufacturer but also its transition to an electric vehicle manufacturer. In other words, Renault will receive subsidies from the Slovenian government in an amount yet to be determined for its investment in e-car production in Novo Mesto.
The exact amount of support has not yet been determined: This will depend on specific applications from Renault for individual measures, which will then be decided according to the legally prescribed rules and procedures. Incentives mentioned so far include investments in tangible and intangible assets, development, research and innovation, for the hiring and retraining of employees, and above all for ensuring the competitiveness of Slovenia as an industrial location, which is becoming less attractive in terms of costs due to globalization.
Slovenian Minister of Economic Development and Technology Matjaž Han said:
"After months of discussions between Renault, Revoz, and our Ministry, we have achieved our goal: The future electric model Twingo E-Tech will be produced in Slovenia. This project is further proof of our commitment to being leaders in sustainable mobility and confirms that Slovenia is an attractive location for complex investments. By investing in cutting-edge technology and supporting companies like Revoz, we are creating the conditions for new jobs, higher productivity, higher wages, and a better quality of life for all citizens."
Renault aims to offer the new Twingo E-Tech Electric for under 20,000 euros and has access to Asian or Moroccan manufacturing facilities, which can produce more cheaply than Central Europe.
What does that mean?
This example from Renault also demonstrates that Europe’s competitiveness is suffering: Auto manufacturers are now extracting ever new commitments from almost all states or regional governments for their productions, otherwise, they would relocate elsewhere. This – unfortunately, is a bitter fact, means that the general public is repeatedly involved in the costs, and at best, the employees in the plant and the region benefit from the manufacturers' profits.
