Renault deepens cooperation with Google on car software

The partners are expanding their cooperation further and are aiming for a digital architecture for the "Software Defined Vehicle" (SDV). This is intended to create specially tailored software components and generate synergies within the context of the group's "Move to Cloud" strategy.

The Renault Group has announced plans to accelerate the collaboration with Google in cloud computing, initiated in 2018, by creating a Digital Twin. The goal is to develop the digital architecture for the "Software Defined Vehicle" (SDV). The virtual vehicle counterpart will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods to enable easier integration of new services into the vehicle, as well as to bring new onboard (in-car services) and off-board applications to the market. The group intends to transition its entire operating model to the cloud in the long term, hoping for greater flexibility, better performance, and higher profitability.

"The complexity of the electronic architecture of vehicles is increasing exponentially, driven by the variety of functions and services expected by customers. Equipped with a common IT platform, continuous over-the-air updates, and optimized access to vehicle data, the SDV approach developed in partnership with Google will shape our vehicles to meet future customer needs. This will increase vehicle value stability and customer loyalty, two important factors for our profitability, and support Renault in the introduction of new services," says Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group.

According to him, the partnership aims to accelerate digital transformation from automotive design through market launch to production. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, believes that the collaboration with the Renault Group has improved comfort, safety, and connectivity on the road.

New onboard innovations for the vehicle are to include:

  • Predictive maintenance and timely fault detection and correction as needed
  • A personalized onboard experience (in-car services) that adapts to driving behavior and commonly used destinations, such as charging stations
  • Insurance models based on actual use and driving behavior

With one billion data records collected daily at all production sites, connected production lines, and supply chain data hosted and analyzed in the cloud, the group, after more than four years of partnership in cloud computing, has comprehensively implemented digitalization within the company, the company concludes in its interim report.
