reev: Ready-to-use software for charging infrastructure

Time is a precious commodity, especially in the installation trade. Therefore, reev sees not only the operators of charging points but also the installers in a key role. And itself in the responsibility. reev's goal is to meet the different requirements and to provide all involved parties – whether it is the electrical specialist who performs the installation or the operator who uses the infrastructure – with an innovative and efficient product experience.

reev is a software manufacturer for intelligent charging solutions in semi-public spaces. With reev Connect, individual or multiple charging points can be easily equipped with reev software. The charging points can be interconnected and controlled, managed, and billed via the reev dashboard – regardless of the hardware manufacturer. Also, charging stations pre-configured with reev software are already on the market from various hardware manufacturers. Because reev's product promise is: "simple, fast, and worry-free." In an interview, the founder and CEO of reev, Eduard Schlutius, explains the different requirements of his customers. He illustrates that the installation of a charging infrastructure can be done within 60 seconds and can serve as a platform for direct communication with the installer.

reev Connect also connects existing charging infrastructures and should be an interesting offer especially for installers?

Schlutius smiles: That’s correct. From the beginning, it has been important to us to enable a simple and efficient process for all stakeholders. This applies to installers, operators, and our sales partners. Our first customers were software-savvy electrical professionals. By now, about 2,000 electricians have installed our software, and more are added every day. For us, it is fundamental that the collaboration is fun – for both sides. After all, we all want to achieve the same goal: to sustainably advance the energy transition and electromobility.

Besides reev Connect, you also offer reev Pre-Configured, where your software is delivered directly with the hardware and can be tested. We know ABL reev ready or the reev software, which is already on board at GEWISS. How is that developing?

Schlutius:reev Connect offers all the functions for an intelligent charging infrastructure. Also for subsequent software integrations on existing infrastructure. However, the current trend is to deliver the hardware already pre-configured. With reev Pre-Configured, we offer an innovative overall solution, a seamless integration of reev software and renowned hardware. Our partner network currently includes 25 manufacturers, and the number is growing steadily.

How is that received by the customers?

Schlutius: Very well. As mentioned, we receive particularly good feedback on reev Pre-Configured. The big advantage is that the speed and efficiency of commissioning for installers is significantly increased, for example, because no additional components are needed and certain processes are eliminated as they have already been handled in advance by reev and the hardware partner. The special highlight for operators is that the reev software with full functionality can be tested free of charge for three months. Therefore, the pre-configured overall package benefits electrical professionals and operators alike. We win a multitude of new customers every month. This is particularly exciting as we focus on the decentralized and semi-public sector. We now serve around 5,200 customers in this area, some of whom have over 1,000 charging points.

But that means reev has to acquire and set up each new manufacturer?

Schlutius: Yes, that's correct. The software functionalities of reev are, of course, already available. We place the highest value on offering our customers an optimal experience and the highest quality when using our systems. To always ensure this, we follow three steps for new cooperations with hardware partners: Step one: we integrate the manufacturers in our system. Step two: we certify the smooth technical compatibility and communication between charging stations and reev software as well as the full integration into the proven and established reev onboarding processes. Step three: a joint, pre-configured product solution is sold as a complete package.

Which data is most requested by customers? Has there been any shift?

Schlutius: Besides load balancing, automatic billing, and particularly the integration of charging data for company cars charging at home are important functions of the reev software that are in demand. Another focus is the greenhouse gas quota trading. It is a great motivation for us that our operators of reev charging infrastructure can optimally use dynamic tariffs to always charge cheaply and green. We manage the transactions and enable our customers to save money and even earn. They receive a payout of their charging revenues once a month. This is also a core product of reev.

Their main promise is also their easy and quick installation for electricians and/or operators. How quick is quick?

Schlutius (smiling): For electrical specialists, commissioning the reev software is possible in less than 60 seconds. For operators who aren't as deeply embedded in the subject matter, commissioning the reev dashboard, the online operator portal, should only take under three minutes.

[Schlutius shows the journalist an exemplary installation process on his mobile phone.]

The installation process is very intuitive and requires only a few steps. First, a number code is entered, followed by a few clicks. In the end, the electrical specialist receives a protocol.

The easy installation along with the protocols is already half the battle?

Schlutius: Yes, that's right. But we want to offer even more. Our goal is to enable installers to stay directly within the reev system and automatically receive notifications about faults, fault types, upcoming maintenance, or further installations, such as expansions. And all this without an additional app.

But how do you get the information then?

Schlutius: Installers want simple solutions. The best are short, precise, and immediate messages – without additional portals and so on. Because they are typically on the go all day. Therefore, we intend to send direct notifications within the already used system. We plan to go live with this feature in the second quarter of 2024.

Our mission as a software manufacturer is to reduce complexity through connected, intelligent systems and increase user-friendliness. This creates unlimited flexibility to meet individual requirements and facilitates standardized, straightforward access to electromobility for a broader user base.

Our request to Schlutius if he also had a voice from the field was positively answered, and he quoted Kevin Duscha, Electronics Technician for Energy and Building Technology at Elektro Breitling, who explained: "The reev software is fast and easy to use, saving me time. I particularly like the feature of the THG quotas and the compatibility with so many different hardware manufacturers, which makes adaptation to various use cases and customer requirements easier."

What does that mean?

In charging infrastructure, the hardware is already in place! But the software will make the difference – and has the potential to simplify even more!
