Rebike: Used pedelecs offer great potential for transportation transformation

The business with refurbished e-bikes is booming. The Munich start-up Rebike Mobility aims to establish itself as Europe's largest independent e-bike refurbisher with a circular business model. With the boom in the pedelec market, the demand for "young used bikes" is also growing, providing strong growth figures for the Kempten-based start-up Rebike. The company sees the bicycle and e-bike market on the verge of a fundamental change. The ongoing professionalization of the used market, the availability of "young used bikes" from popular company bike leasing contracts, and the longevity of premium e-bikes positively stimulate the used market and promote circular business models, believe the entrepreneurs.

"We predict the biggest market changes in the next few years since the introduction of e-bikes! The topic of young used bikes from company bike leasing contracts will occupy the entire industry and change customers' purchasing behavior in the long term," explains Rebike Mobility co-founder and CEO Thomas Bernik at Eurobike 2023 in Frankfurt.

Rebike.com sees itself as the largest circular platform for used e-bikes and benefits from the strong demand for used branded e-bikes. Every year, more young used e-bikes from attractive business leasing contracts return to the market. Already, one in four new e-bikes is leased, and by 2025 the number of "returns" in Germany alone is estimated to exceed 100,000 e-bikes. As an independent refurbisher, the company takes over these returns in large quantities from leasing providers or dealers. Additionally, e-bikes regularly return from its own subscription business ebike-abo.de.

"In the future, refurbished e-bikes will become a standard offering in the bicycle industry. This way, resources are optimally used and high-quality models from renowned manufacturers are not sold off cheaply or shipped abroad. Instead, they find a second owner in a refurbished state. The end consumers also benefit: They can buy high-quality models at attractive prices and get certified quality, including a warranty. We are the largest independent player in this area and will continue to develop the market," explains Bernik further.

The company has set up a new refurbishment and logistics center in Kempten, whose capacities are continuously being expanded to meet market dynamics. In the medium term, 50,000 used e-bikes are to be refurbished annually and delivered to customers across Europe.

"Used bicycles need perfect refurbishment, warranty and service as well as professional marketing to compete with new products in the market. We at Rebike are excellently positioned for this," explains Sven Erger, co-founder of Rebike Mobility and responsible for the refurbishment center.
