Quantron: Many New Models
With the Quantron Quargo 4 EV, Quantron AG, a specialist in battery and fuel cell-powered zero-emission mobility, launches the second vehicle in the newly designed Quantron brand. The battery-electric powered transporter was presented today to a selected audience of investors, press, and customers at the Q-Days 2022 at the company headquarters in Gersthofen near Augsburg. In addition, the company provided many further insights into its wide range of zero-emission commercial vehicles and offerings related to e-mobility.
The newcomer in the portfolio is a typical small truck in a cabover design. This means: short wheelbase, great maneuverability. With a wheelbase of only 3.3 meters, rear-wheel drive, and a large steering angle, the new Quargo is likely to be significantly more maneuverable than the well-established Q-Light based on the Daily. The Quargo 4 EV is powered by a 120 kW electric motor, and the battery capacity is 81 kWh. This gives the small truck a range between 230 and 350 kilometers, depending on load and topography. The charging time at a 60 kW DC fast charger is about 1.2 hours. The powertrain operates without a reduction gearbox, and the top speed is said to be 90 km/h. Quantron sources the batteries from CATL. The small truck is designed for a total weight of 4.5 tonnes. With the shown box body, Quantron specifies the payload at 2,300 kg. The newcomer does not yet feature a hydraulic tail lift—it is equipped with light double-wing doors. The price is reportedly just under 60,000 euros.
The Quargo expands the Quantron portfolio downward, while above, Quantron is venturing into the world of heavy tractor units. For the first time, the Augsburg-based company is presenting the QHD BEV 50-280 based on the DAF CF Space Cab. Under the cab sits a 350 kW permanently excited electric motor from Dana, coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission from Allison. The battery pack is located between the axles on the outside of the frame and currently offers a capacity of 280 kWh. According to Quantron product manager Reiner Dellori, the range is estimated at 200 to 220 kilometers. This makes the DAF tractor unit a suitable candidate for food transportation and light local delivery tasks.
With the recently introduced 12-meter city bus Cizaris, Quantron is entering the bus segment. The city bus, with a range of up to 370 kilometers (eSort2), is initially intended for the markets of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Scandinavia, and Southern Europe. According to Alexander Stucke, Quantron’s head of buses, the introduction to the domestic market is not expected before the second half of 2022. The specific high requirements of the local market, as well as the VDV guidelines concerning the driver's workspace and other systems, still need some time.
At the end of the presentation, Quantron founder and CEO Andreas Haller took the premiere audience to the sanctum sanctorum: to be admired in the “Vehicle Clinic” were the Quantron Minivan BEV and a significantly larger transporter chassis. The former resembles a VW T5, only about ten percent smaller, while the latter is clearly a Sprinter copy. What ideas are behind these? Andreas Haller explains: "Wait for the IAA in Hanover, where we will lift the veil of silence…”
What does this mean?
Quantron is positioning itself broader and stronger than ever with the new models. The only downside: practically none of these are produced in Augsburg, as they are almost exclusively Quantron-conceptualized and labeled vehicles. Nevertheless, the Swabians are on a path to strength: from converter to vehicle manufacturer.
