Porsche Taycan drifts into Guinness World Record
Instructor Dennis Retera completed 210 laps at the Porsche Experience Center Hockenheimring without the front wheels ever pointing in the direction of the curves. In doing so, he covered a good 42.171 kilometers within 55 minutes, at an average speed of 46 km/h. Thus, he secured the record for the longest continuous drift in an electric car.
Rear-wheel drive makes it possible
"When the stability control programs are switched off, powersliding the electric Porsche is extremely easy, especially of course with this model variant, which is driven exclusively by the rear wheels," explains Retera. The track is not new terrain for the 34-year-old Dutchman. Previously active in karting and formula racing, he is quite familiar with the conditions of the Hockenheim track, but the high concentration required over 210 laps is a challenge despite the experience. Controlling the drift with the steering was the success method.
Taycan, the moderate record machine
Porsche is not setting its first record with its electric model: the 24-hour endurance run on the high-speed track in Nardò was also set as a record, as well as the best time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Head of Development Michael Steiner emphasizes that the Taycan is not being favored as a "range world champion," but as a sporty vehicle with reproducible performance.
What does that mean?
E-mobility can also be fun! Although theoretically you can drift in any car, very few would manage it as smoothly as in the Porsche Taycan. And as tempting as it might be, it’s better to leave this driving skill to the professionals on closed tracks.
