polisMOBILITY 2023: Fastned focuses, expands, and targets cities

With a wide portfolio of modularly configurable HPC charging stations, ranging from simple neighborhood models to complete rest stations, the Dutch fast-charging pioneer is focusing on specialization. And it is making its way into the cities.

For the first time, the Dutch fast-charging network pioneer Fastned also presented itself at the trade fair conference in Cologne. With a bright yellow Renault Megane E-Tech at the center, the provider informed attendees about its portfolio, which now ranges from the "simply winged" HPC double charging station for urban parking spaces or neighborhoods, such as the one first realized in Amsterdam, to HPC drive-through stations, and even complete charging rest stations including a stylistically matching gastronomy section.

This underscores the provider's specialization and aims to differentiate itself from the strengthening OEM or corporate competition. In addition to the concept as a "drive-through station" like at gas stations, the design with yellow wings, distinctive wooden beams, and solar roofs also contributes to this differentiation, ensuring the power supply for the stations while simultaneously serving as rain protection.

"Participating in polisMOBILITY 2023 is an important milestone for us at Fastned. It is the first trade fair presence of Fastned in Germany," said Linda Boll, Public Affairs and Country Manager Fastned Germany.

In February, the HPC pioneer announced the inauguration of its 250th charging station in Europe and plans to continue rapid expansion. For this, significantly simpler approval procedures, particularly in Germany, are required, as demanded by a representative at the booth. The lead time still takes too long and is extremely inconsistent nationwide, regionally, and locally. The actual construction takes the least amount of time once all approvals are in place.

Especially in urban areas, the density of HPC is lacking

In this context, Linda Boll referred to the current figures from the Federal Network Agency regarding the number of charging stations in Germany. As of February, there were 69,925 normal charging points and 13,261 fast charging points. Looking more closely at the distribution of locations reveals that the expansion of fast charging infrastructure is especially lagging behind in cities.

"If the mobility transition is to succeed, a comprehensive fast charging infrastructure is also needed here," demanded Boll.

Through fast charging, electric cars can be charged for a range of up to 300 kilometers in just 15 minutes, whereas it would take several hours at an AC pillar to achieve this range.

At customer request: Apple Carplay app for navigation

The latest new feature, introduced in response to urgent customer demand, was the development of a dedicated Apple CarPlay app that aims to contribute to an even more pleasant charging experience. Electric car drivers can now find Fastned stations directly in their vehicle's infotainment system, check prices, and monitor the availability of charging stations in real time, the provider advertises. An extension to Android systems is in development, but most Fastned users currently have iOS devices, according to the provider.
