Pirelli Cyber Tire interacts with ABS, ESP & Co.

According to the Italian tire manufacturer, it is the first tire capable of this. It was presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The Cyber Tyre could be groundbreaking: Pirelli's system is based on sensors that, for the first time, enable the tire to communicate with the vehicle's stability control systems — including ABS, ESP, and traction control. The information provided by the sensors is used to improve both performance and safety. This technology is being used for the first time in the super sports car Pagani Utopia. It was introduced at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024.

Tire with “technical insider knowledge”

The Pirelli tires developed specifically for the Pagani Utopia — P Zero Corsa, P Zero Trofeo RS, and P Zero Winter — are equipped with special sensors. These sensors are located inside the tread profile and are connected via Bluetooth to the vehicle's electronic control unit, which regulates the dynamic driving systems. The sensors provide valuable information so that the vehicle can select the optimal driving mode for the mounted tires to exploit their potential to the fullest. This dialogue between car and tire is made possible by software developed and implemented by Pirelli, which works directly with the car's electronic "brain."

For example, if winter tires are fitted, the ABS receives information on how to use these tires optimally to shorten the braking distance. If the car is instead fitted with semi-slick tires, the stability and traction control are informed that additional grip is available.

Without this information, all driving dynamics control systems would act more conservatively and use assumptions and engine maps that do not consider the individual properties and performance of the tires. With the “technical insider knowledge,” however, the vehicle's control systems can operate much more efficiently. This increases both performance and safety.

“Green” Tires

At the same time, Pirelli intends to increasingly use new materials that replace fossil raw materials. Third-party certifications document the origin, traceability, and use of the materials. An important part of this strategy is the decision to use only FSCTM (Forest Stewardship Council) certified natural rubber in all European Pirelli plants by 2026. FSCTM forestry applies strict standards that ensure the preservation of biodiversity and economic benefits for local workers and communities.

On the occasion of the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Pirelli announced a collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to supply tires made from FSCTM-certified forestry materials for the entire range of the company’s luxury vehicles.

In 2021, Pirelli produced the world’s first road tire made from FSCTM-certified natural rubber and rayon. Further milestones on this path include the introduction of tires made from FSCTM-certified natural rubber in Formula 1 since the first Grand Prix 2024, as well as the debut of FSCTM certification in cycling a few weeks ago with the new Pirelli P Zero Race RS2.

Elect Technology for Electrified Vehicles

The Elect technology developed by Pirelli is specifically tailored to electrified vehicles. In 2023, Pirelli also launched the P Zero E: the first UHP tire with more than 55% bio-based and recycled materials in the entire replacement tire range (third-party certification according to ISO-14021 standard). Additionally, the tire received a triple A rating on the EU tire label and features the new Pirelli RunForward puncture protection technology.

To help customers recognize products that consist of at least 50% natural or recycled materials, Pirelli has developed a special logo that can be seen on the sidewalls of the tires. The latest tire to bear this special marking is the new P Zero Winter 2 Elect, which was launched a few weeks ago and consists of more than 50% of these materials – also certified by third parties.
