The topic of sustainability is more relevant than ever for tire manufacturers: on one hand, tires require a lot of raw materials and energy for production; on the other hand, they are still worn down on the roads, contributing to local fine dust alongside brake dust. Despite this, they must offer a high level of safety and grip.

Pirelli aims to at least somewhat untangle this Gordian knot with the new Cinturato Winter 2: innovative, transforming tire sipes are supposed to ensure grip at all times. To achieve this, the tire experts developed a 3D structure, where the sipes become longer relative to the rubber as it wears down. Their design changes from linear to zigzag form. This, in turn, increases their total surface area and is intended to give the Cinturato Winter 2 additional performance under snowy, wet, and dry conditions, even with decreasing tread depth.

Advantage Motorsport: The Cinturato Winter 2 is designed to offer greater mileage

Additionally, the new Cinturato Winter 2 is supposed to offer higher mileage compared to the previous generation of Pirelli winter tires. This is made possible through a new tread pattern, a new structure, and, of course, a new compound. Here, an innovative system of functionalized polymers is intended to help improve performance under wet and snowy conditions. A patented process developed by Pirelli, based on the company's extensive motorsport experience, was used for this.

And despite more grip and longer service life, the rolling resistance of the Cinturato Winter 2 is said to have been reduced compared to its predecessor. This reduces energy consumption and thus pollutant emissions. Additionally, the winter tire is particularly quiet due to its special tread design, which is essential for electric cars.

What does that mean?

The new Cinturato Winter 2 improves in all respects once again – and should offer a noticeable and audible improvement over its predecessor, especially on electric cars.
