The PSA subsidiary Peugeot has introduced the fully electric version of its B-segment small transporter in unison with Citroen and Opel. The e-Partner goes on sale from autumn 2021 and completes the range of electrically powered commercial vehicles alongside the already available e-Expert and the new e-Boxer, which will be available shortly. As with the counterparts, the e-Partner features the PSA-E drive package consisting of a 100-kW synchronous electric motor combined with a 50-kWh lithium-ion battery, which should be sufficient for a range of 275 kilometers according to WLTP.

In three modes - Eco, Normal, and Sport - the unit delivers 60, 80, and the full 100 kW respectively, and 190, 210, and 260 Nm of torque. The small transporter then accelerates to 100 km/h in a swift 11.2 seconds, completes overtaking maneuvers from 80 to 120 km/h in 8.9 seconds, and reaches speeds of up to 130 km/h. Recuperation is in two stages, moderate and somewhat stronger, with the strategy not designed for so-called one-pedal driving. As required by law, an acoustic signal can be heard for the safety of pedestrians at speeds of up to 30 km/h, both in forward and reverse operation.

Variants as with the Combustion Engine

The compact van is also available in two lengths (Standard and Long) as well as in two variants: the panel van with up to three seats in front with a flexible modular bench, and the double cab with up to five seats. The towing capacity is limited to 750 kilos, the payload is up to 800 kilos, also at the combustion engine level, as is the load volume of 3.8 to 4.4 m³.

The batteries are recharged using an 11-kW onboard charger in AC Type 2 or a 100-kW charger in DC with CCS system. A warranty of eight years or 160,000 kilometers is granted for the energy storage systems for 70 percent of their charging capacity. The manufacturer specifies the charging times as follows:

  • with a standard socket (8A), for a full charge in 31 hours,
  • with a reinforced socket (16A), for a full charge in 15 hours,
  • with a 7.4 kW wall box: full charge in 7.5 hours with the single-phase (7.4 kW) onboard charger,
  • with an 11 kW wall box: full charge in 5 hours with the 3-phase (11 kW) onboard charger,
  • with a fast charger: The thermal control of the battery allows the use of 100-kW chargers and reaching 80% charge in 30 minutes.

In the interior, there is a 100 percent digital instrument cluster with a 10-inch high-definition digital panel that is individually configurable and customizable. Also optional is a TomTom 3D navigation system with real-time route guidance and charging point location. Thanks to Mirror Screen, smartphone apps can be used via the touchscreen. The function is compatible with Android Auto™ and Apple Carplay™.

Higher initial cost offset by lower TCO

The manufacturer promises significantly lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), which should be at least equivalent to a vehicle with a combustion engine. The higher acquisition costs are intended to be offset by a higher residual value at resale, financial incentives, but above all lower maintenance costs (approx. 50 percent less over 48 months) and lower energy costs, which are estimated to be up to 70 percent lower compared to a combustion engine. As usual, the manufacturer also markets various charging infrastructure solutions and offers access to 220,000 terminals in Europe via the Free2Move subsidiary's charging pass.

The van market recorded more than 613,000 vehicles in Europe in 2019. The manufacturer sees the Partner as the market leader in this segment. Moreover, its market share has been steadily growing since the introduction of the latest version in 2018. Almost 80 percent of commercial vehicle drivers travel an average of less than 200 kilometers per day, making an electric version an attractive option, according to the manufacturer.
