Peugeot e-Lion Day: The Lion is set to charge faster - and last longer

As early as 2023, every model is expected to be at least electrified, including hybrids. By 2025, the Stellantis subsidiary aims for a complete BEV lineup, with plans to sell only fully electric models in Europe by 2030. And they are designed to last much longer: instead of 15 to 25 years! New entry-level subscription starting at 7 cents per km. An end to the SUV trend is even being suggested.

Stellantis subsidiary Peugeot aims to accelerate its electrification efforts. As Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson announced during an international online presentation, the brand's entire lineup will be fully electric by 2030. By 2025, the company already plans to have a full BEV portfolio alongside the remaining combustion engines. In the next two years, five fully electric models are slated to launch: the e-308 and e-308 SW, the e-408, the e-3008, and the e-5008. The compact class cars are known to be powered by a new electric motor that produces 115 kW (156 hp) and offers a range of over 400 kmbased on a reportedly sensationally economical consumption of 12.7 kWh/100 km.

A bigger step will be taken with the e-3008, which will be introduced in the second half of 2023. It will be the first model to use the new STLA platform and is expected to achieve a range of up to 700 kilometers. Peugeot plans to offer a choice of three electric drivetrains, including dual-motor options. The same platform will also power the e-5008, which is set to follow shortly after.

“The e-Lion project will define Peugeot's strategy as an electrified brand (EV) and ensure we stay in tune with society to provide mobility that meets our brand values," promises Linda Jackson, Global CEO of Peugeot.

Announcement of new hybrid technology

However, Peugeot also intends to further improve conventional drivetrains in terms of emissions. A new MHEV 48v (Mild Hybrid) system with new hybrid technology is set to debut this year with the 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, and 408 models. The system comprises a new generation PureTech petrol engine with 73 kW (100 hp) or 100 kW (136 hp), coupled with an unprecedented electrified 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (E-DCS6) that integrates a 21 kW electric motor. Thanks to a battery that charges during driving, this technology aims to offer higher torque at lower revs and reduce fuel consumption by 15 percent (starting from 126 g CO2/km for the 3008). In city traffic, a C-segment SUV equipped with this hybrid system can drive more than 50 percent of the time in a 100 percent emission-free electric mode, promoting this bridging technology.

New platform offers interior design flexibility

With the new platform, Peugeot anticipates new opportunities in interior design, making it more spacious. Designers also promise new proportions for the exterior, greater flexibility, and freedom to reconceptualize the vehicle's overall dimensions. There is even talk of a "post-SUV trend" to create more efficient vehicle silhouettes in the future. The flat Inception study serves as a model here. In terms of operation, Steer-by-Wire aims to unlock new methods of vehicle control, including the development of the so-called Hypersquare and the next generation of the i-Cockpit with a new HMI (Human-Machine Interface) to be introduced from 2026.

“When our customers drive an electric Peugeot, it is still primarily a Peugeot, and this experience will always be our priority," promises Jerome Micheron, Product Director.

Affordability as an Important Criterion

With all the innovations, a special focus will also be placed on affordability, in view of rising living costs and inflation. Although it will be difficult to create a "business case" for an electric 108 in the foreseeable future, according to the chief developer, he referred to the bestseller in the program, the e-208, which is also affordable. Additionally, he announced two types of leasing:

  • PEUGEOT As You Go: A "pay-as-you-go" offer with monthly payments, based on a flat rate of 150 Euros for 500 kilometers (currently available only in France). Customers can add extra kilometers at the price of just 7 cents per kilometer if needed. The manufacturer plans to expand the offer to the entire model range and other markets.
  • PEUGEOT Your Way: A single monthly payment covers the leasing, all service and maintenance work, insurance, and even charging. All costs arising from ownership are included in one simple payment. But unlike a smartphone, customers are not bound to a long-term commitment. If circumstances change, the vehicle can be upgraded or simply returned.

Big Steps in Environmental Matters

The new models are expected to make a big leap in environmental performance, reducing the so-called GWP (Global Warming Potential) by 25 percent for the next two vehicle generations. The ongoing initiatives of the brand and the group range from procurement and supply chain strategies to the general composition and structure of the vehicle, to the materials used:

  • Light and glass replace black and chrome
  • lightweight seats
  • recycled alloy wheels
  • focus on the use of recycled materials, including recycled alloy wheels
  • global lifecycle strategy in the development of our next product generation.

In the future, the lifespan of a battery-electric vehicle will be 20 to 25 years, promises the manufacturer, while today it is about 15 years for an internal combustion engine. This extended lifecycle is a great opportunity for designers to imagine new interactions with products during their lifetime.

The 4 Phases of the Lifecycle Design Approach:

  1. Duration: the architecture designed for a lifespan of 25 years, based on the Stellantis platform
  2. Refurbishment: the ability to refurbish and recycle key parts, including the use of recycled parts (see sustainability)
  3. Update: refreshment of key wear parts of the vehicle (upholstery/trim), as seen in the Peugeot Inception Concept, so that the vehicle feels new with each owner change
  4. On Demand: regular updates of HMI, lighting, and other software-driven components to keep the vehicle current.

The focus on minimizing weight, waste, and processing is intended to lead to forward-looking techniques, as shown by the Inception Concept with its four sustainability points. It saves weight by using thinner seats and breathable fabrics, reduces waste through molded fabrics, saves resources with raw material surfaces—no alloy, no chrome—and increases efficiency in operation through better powertrains. The brand sees itself on track to meet its commitment to be CO2 neutral (Carbon Net Zero) by 2038. In fact, the manufacturer forecasts a global warming potential reduction of minus 60 percent worldwide and minus 70 percent in Europe by 2030.

Label for Sustainability: Sustainera

From now on, customers will find the SUSTAINera label on CE equipment. It is already on the packaging of the parts and will also be seen on the vehicles. When customers see it, they can be sure that the production of this part required up to 80 percent fewer raw materials and up to 50 percent less energy compared to a corresponding part without recycled components.

“Carbon Net Zero is not just three words, but a mindset, an approach that we all must adopt as a company and as individuals. Likewise, the 'e-Lion' project is not a strategy and not a prospectus. It is a project that we are committed to implementing because it is crucial for us and future generations," promises Linda Jackson.
