Peugeot E-408: Electric Fastback Achieves 453 Kilometers Range
After the introduction of the plug-in hybrid version 225 two years ago, Stellantis subsidiary Peugeot is now completing its electric offering with an electric version of the mid-range model 408. This aims to combine a sporty fastback silhouette with zero-emissions efficiency and offer a range of up to 453 kilometers. Trust is instilled with a warranty lasting up to 8 years or up to 160,000 km. The base version Allure is available from an MSRP of 46,600 euros. With an overall length of 4.69 m and a width of 1.85 m (with mirrors folded in), the fastback utilizes the multi-energy platform E-EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform), which is distinguished by a wheelbase of 2.79 m. These impressive dimensions allow for the integration of the 58-kWh battery in the vehicle's underbody between the wheels, preserving interior space and lowering the center of gravity for dynamic road performance.
Flat Silhouette, Good Aerodynamics
Thanks to its height of 1.49 meters, the aerodynamic profile is said to have been improved (SCx: 0.66) to complement the sporty profile. Bumpers, front air intakes, underbody protection, and lower covers for the front wheels have been optimized, and a special underbody has been installed. This is said to reduce consumption to 15.2 kWh/100 km, allowing a combined range of up to 453 km (WLTP). The energy comes from a 58.2 kWh battery equipped with NMC 811 technology, meaning 80 percent nickel, 10 percent manganese, 10 percent cobalt. It is supposed to offer increased energy density with 18 onboard modules. According to the manufacturer, most customers in the C-segment have a typical daily driving distance of less than 45 km. Regeneration, which can be activated in 3 stages via paddles behind the compact steering wheel, also contributes to increasing efficiency. In the last two stages, the rear brake lights automatically illuminate. Three driving modes are also available: in standard mode, 140 kW (190 hp) and a torque of 300 Nm are available. Sport mode activates the full 157 kW and 345 Nm, which can also be temporarily activated via "kickdown." The Eco mode is limited to 125 kW and 270 Nm.
Heat Pump as Standard, 130-kW Charger Also Available
Another efficiency factor is the standard heat pump, as well as steering wheel and seat heating. Charging in alternating current is standard with an 11-kW on-board charger, and in direct current with 120 kW, which allows charging from 20 to 80 percent of the battery in just over 30 minutes (at nominal battery temperature) and the recovery of 100 km range in just over 10 minutes. The charging levels can be limited to 20 and 80 percent.
In terms of driver assistance, data from five cameras and three radar devices, partly sourced from higher segments, are utilized. The equipment includes:
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with STOP&GO function and adjustable distance regulation between vehicles.
- Active Safety Brake Plus with front collision warning detects pedestrians and cyclists, day and night, from 7 km/h up to 140 km/h.
- Active Lane Keeping Assistant with steering intervention
- Attention Warning, which detects attention issues on long drives and at speeds over 65 km/h through the analysis of micro-movements of the steering wheel.
- Advanced recognition and display of traffic signs in the digital instrument cluster: stop signs, one-way signs, signs for the beginning and end of overtaking bans, in addition to the usual speed-dependent signs.
- Blind Spot Assistant with a range of 75 meters
- Rear Warning warns of approaching hazards nearby when reversing.
