Peugeot 208 and 2008 next generation to be fully electric

Imparato finds clear words about the future of Peugeot's top sellers in the B-segment, which are expected to be offered exclusively with battery power from the second half of the decade:

“The B-segment and the B-SUV segment of the next generation after 208 and 2008 will be fully electric.”

However, it must be assumed that the current generation will still run on combustion engines even after a facelift, but "second half" of the decade means: The successors will then be electric. The decision for the next 208/2008 generation to become fully electric is supported by current sales figures of electrified models, as the Peugeot boss explained:

“Worldwide, the trend for electric cars is increasing month by month, even week by week.”

For the 208 and 2008, the electric share of all vehicles sold is now over 14 percent – initially, they planned with 10 percent plus or minus x. But plug-ins are also increasing: In 2020, the PHEV versions of the 3008 had a share of 27 percent, so that last year every tenth Peugeot was electrified. Imparato also confirmed that 108 and others would be discontinued:

“If you add an electric drive plus connectivity plus 5G plus EuroNCAP plus other regulations to an A-segment vehicle, this affects the affordability of mobility.”

From the current 10,000 Euros that a 108 costs, it would quickly become 30,000 Euros, Imparato calculated.

What does that mean?

Electrification is likely to progress faster than expected, especially in the compact segment. And if the next 208 becomes electric, this is also likely to apply to the Opel Corsa, Citroën C3 and DS 3 Crossback, as well as any Fiat, Alfa-Romeo, and Lancia models built on this basis.
