Paris triples parking fees for SUVs - Part of the traffic transition

(dpa) Declaration of war on SUVs: Paris makes parking for vehicles over 1.6 tons more expensive. Visitors with heavy cars must pay three times the standard parking fee. Another change in the course of the traffic revolution also affects drivers: a speed limit of 50 km/h on the Périphérique. In addition, bike lanes and sidewalks are being expanded, and parking spaces are being reduced.

For visitors to Paris, drastically increased parking fees for heavy cars will come into effect from the beginning of October. One hour of parking in the city center now costs 18 euros for heavy SUVs and other weighty vehicles, while six hours will cost a whopping 225 euros. Outside the city center, rates are somewhat lower. Residents of the capital, craftsmen, or disabled people are exempt from the regulation.

In a citizen survey in early February, in which only just under six percent of eligible voters participated, 54.5 percent voted in favor of increasing parking fees. The new tariff will apply to combustion and hybrid models weighing from 1.6 tons and electric models weighing from 2 tons. The regulation does not apply to private parking garages. The city argues that the heavy vehicles cause increased environmental pollution, take up a lot of public space, and endanger traffic safety.

Monitoring of the new regulation is relatively simple. Paid parking in Paris has been controlled for some time using video vehicles that capture the license plates of parked cars. Anyone parking must enter their license plate number at the parking meter beforehand. With the automatic matching of license plates, the city has access to owner and vehicle data and can thus determine which weight class the parked vehicles fall into.

Increased Fees as Part of the Traffic Transformation

With the citizen survey, Mayor Anne Hidalgo garnered support for another step in the traffic transformation that she is pushing forward with the red-green city government, despite resistance. Years ago, she had several riverside roads along the Seine closed to cars and made accessible to pedestrians. The bicycle network in Paris is expanding, for which the number of car lanes and parking spaces is being reduced. New green spaces are being created, and in almost all urban areas, a speed limit of 30 km/h has been introduced. Over a year ago, the e-scooter rental service in Paris also ended after a majority opposed the scooters in a citizen survey.

And starting from early October, the mayor is implementing another measure despite protests, even from the transport minister, which is annoying some drivers. On the urban motorway, the heavily trafficked "Périphérique," the maximum permissible speed is being lowered from 70 to 50 km/h. Among other things, this is supposed to mean less noise for the many residents adjacent to the motorway. However, the average speed on the ring road during peak hours is significantly below 50 kilometers per hour.
