The company Opes Solar Mobility has decided on the location for its new solar factory: In Zwenkau, Saxony, solar technology for vehicles such as trucks, motorhomes, and buses will be produced on over 12,000 m2 starting at the end of 2024. The solar modules, developed in collaboration with German research institutes, will be installed on a large scale and are expected to result in lower costs and increased ranges. Several hundred thousand vehicles can be equipped annually with the modules from the factory. Opes Solar Mobility is a joint venture between the solar module specialist Opes Solutions and a strategic investor from Germany.

Location Decision After Careful Analysis

The choice fell on Zwenkau for several reasons, including the proximity to the Fraunhofer CSP in Halle and the University of Leipzig. Other reasons are the good location and transport connections of the site as well as its proximity to the company's European customers.

“Automotive manufacturers today also select their suppliers based on the security of the supply chain. Production outside the EU would involve significantly more risks. Additionally, we are pleased to contribute to the rebuilding of the photovoltaic industry in Germany,” emphasizes CEO Robert Händel.

Many Open Positions in Production and Administration

Opes will hire around 120 employees at the Zwenkau site over the next two years. Initially, this includes engineers, logistics and software experts, production managers, and buyers, followed later by skilled workers with varying qualifications.

“Anyone interested in technology and wanting to work in a future-oriented industry is warmly invited to apply. Zwenkau is also very easy to reach from Halle and Leipzig,” said Händel.

Special Machinery and Own Patents

Opes' technology enables the production of modules that are extremely lightweight and flexible while also withstanding high temperatures, shocks, vibrations, and even high-pressure cleaners. This capability is based on years of production experience at the company's first plant in China. Since 2015, Opes Solutions has produced over 10 million compact solar modules there, which are used for off-grid devices and mobile applications, for example.

The module technology was developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. Opes holds several patents on production processes and module designs.
