Opel Movano: With Battery, Fuel Cell, and More Connectivity
In harmony with its siblings in the Stellantis group, Opel has introduced an update for the large transporter Movano. The new Movano Electric represents a significant advancement. The entirely new electric drive boasts 200 kW/270 hp and 400 Newton meters of torque. Thanks to a new 110 kWh battery, the large van can travel up to 420 kilometers according to WLTP without needing to stop for a charge. The top speed is up to 130 km/h.
The 37- and 70-kWh batteries of the old retrofitted electric version are thus a thing of the past. Additionally, there is a 230-volt socket on the dashboard for charging other electrical devices. Three driving modes are available: "Normal" (limited to 160 kW power), "Eco" for range optimization (120 kW), and "Power" for maximum performance (200 kW). Using paddle shifters on the steering wheel, drivers can also set four levels of recuperation when braking.
The new Movano Electric comes standard with a three-phase 11 kW onboard charger for AC charging. However, it is also the first Opel to offer the capability to charge up to 150 kW with DC charging. At a public fast-charge station, it takes just 55 minutes to charge to 80 percent of battery capacity.
A hydrogen version is also set to come
Additionally, from 2024, the large Opel will also be available as the Movano Hydrogen, especially for those who need to cover long distances and refuel quickly. The hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will offer up to 400 kilometers of range (WLTP) and can be filled with hydrogen in about 5 minutes. Three turbodiesel engines complete the offering, with outputs ranging from 88 kW/120 hp to 103 kW/140 hp and 132 kW/180 hp. Depending on the power level, they can be paired with an entirely new eight-speed automatic transmission. This, along with aerodynamic improvements to the body, is expected to decrease consumption by up to 9 percent compared to previous engines.
Driver assistance at Level 2
In terms of driver assistance, the new features now include systems like a fatigue warning, lane-keeping assistant, adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, 360-degree parking sensors, park assist, and a digital rearview mirror that further enhances all-around visibility, in addition to existing features like traffic sign recognition, front collision warning with emergency braking, and blind spot assist. A total of 22 assistance systems and electronic helpers increase driving and maneuvering safety. The combination of adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, lane-keeping, and traffic jam assistant ensures that the van can steer, brake, and accelerate autonomously at speeds up to 30 km/h, for example in congested traffic.
Cockpit with More Digitalization
The redesigned cockpit optionally offers a colorful 7-inch driver information display and infotainment systems with up to a 10-inch color touchscreen. Wireless smartphone charging is as possible as keyless entry and start of the vehicle. An optional flexible "Eat & Work" bench seat can be used in the future as a work and break surface. The Movano underlines its new, modern, and forward-looking appearance also from the outside: it features a brand-typical refreshed design at the front and rear and optionally comes with LED headlights.
All Variants Available
Four vehicle lengths, three wheelbases, and three heights, as well as versions as a panel van, platform chassis, double cabin, flatbed, in the future also as a tipper, and much more allow countless configuration options for the respective requirement profile. The "Big One" from Opel makes no compromises in terms of payload or cargo volume in any variant. Even the battery-electric Movano Electric shoulders up to 1,500 kilograms of payload, while the diesel can handle up to 2 tons. Thanks to the practical underfloor construction of the batteries, the loading volume of up to 17 m³ is fully retained in the electric vehicle. Last but not least, the Movano Electric is also suitable for numerous conversion options.
