Opel: Monza as an E-Crossover?
Within the Stellantis Group, Opel is expected to offer a complete range of Crossover-CUV and SUV models, with the top model potentially being the Monza. This would then be based on PSA's "large" eVMP architecture, which can offer batteries with capacities ranging from 60 to 100 kWh, enabling WLTP ranges of 400 to 650 kilometers. The eVMP provides front and all-wheel drives with up to 250 kW of power. The platform is set to be used for the first time in 2023 with a C-SUV, presumably in the new Peugeot 3008 or 5008, which means Peugeot will also continue to expand its efforts towards "premium." The new Monza could launch in 2024, meaning that the project has recently commenced.
Also interesting is Opel's planned reorientation, which is expected to lean more towards its future US sibling Dodge: according to CEO Michael Lohscheller, Opel is set to become sportier again:
“We also want to carry the theme of sportiness into the future. Regardless of what it will be called. What is clear is: Mobility has to be fun, it has to touch the heart and not just the mind. This is especially true for electromobility.”
With the Monza, Opel could for the first time break away from offering models as both combustion engines and electric vehicles, which could be accelerated by the decisions of some cities to definitively ban combustion engines starting in 2035. With the Monza, Opel would compete against the Mustang Mach-E, as well as Tesla and BMW (i-next).
What does this mean?
Opel does not want to withdraw from the higher vehicle classes, especially since there are better margins to be found here compared to models like the Corsa. And since Peugeot and DS are also expected to use the new eVMP platform, it is logical that Opel could construct a Monza that significantly rounds out the top end of the SUV portfolio.
