Opel Astra Sports Tourer: Plug-in Hybrid Available Right from the Start

The Astra Wagon starts with the 180 HP plug-in hybrid, followed later by the 225 HP version. Good news: The Astra is shorter than its predecessor - but still offers a longer wheelbase.

Though it won't hit the streets until mid-2022, it has already been unveiled: The new Astra Sports Tourer. From the outset, it will be available as a plug-in, with petrol and diesel engines ranging from 110 PS (81 kW) to 130 PS (96 kW) sitting below it in terms of power. The good news is that the new Astra Sports Tourer is shrinking by six centimeters to 4.64 meters in length, yet still offers 5.7 centimeters more wheelbase. Opel specifies a generous luggage volume of 608 to 1,634 liters, including a lower compartment. Due to the batteries in the underbody, the PHEV variants have 70 liters less. Also noteworthy: The rear seat bench is split-foldable into three sections, forming a flat surface with the trunk floor when the backrests are folded down, and the load compartment cover can be stowed in a compartment when not in use. For combustion engines, the optionally available "Intelli-Space" trunk floor makes the cargo area even more versatile. The movable floor can be easily adjusted to two heights and locked at a 45-degree angle with just one hand. The retractable load compartment cover also enhances comfort. It can be stowed underneath independently of the set height of the trunk floor—unlike some competitors, where this is only possible when the trunk floor is raised.

Furthermore, "Intelli-Space" also allows direct access to the tire repair kit in the (unlikely) event of a flat tire. Both the kit and the first-aid kit are practically and space-savingly stored in the rear, so they can be accessed from both the rear seat and the trunk without having to unload all the luggage first.

Additionally, the new Astra Sports Tourer's tailgate can also be conveniently opened and closed automatically via foot movement under the rear, depending on the equipment. The Astra Sports Tourer is expected to hit the market in the middle of next year. Prices are not yet fixed.

What does this mean?

The Sports Tourer continues Opel's Kadett Caravan tradition and scores points with an intelligent package, less overall length, and more wheelbase compared to its predecessor. A purely electric version would be desirable.
