The Berlin-based e-cargo bike manufacturer ONOMOTION and the parcel service provider DPD have announced an expansion of their collaboration in emission-free parcel delivery. In total, DPD will deploy 52 of the ONO PAT e-cargo bikes in eight major German cities over the course of 2022, the companies announced. With the cooperation and project scaling, new logistics solutions for large cities are to be opened in the future. The rollout of the new bikes in Berlin and Dortmund is already well underway. Together, the companies plan to station additional ONO e-cargo bikes in the cities of Dresden, Hamburg, Hamm, Hanover, Cologne, and Stuttgart.
The goal of Germany's second-largest courier, express, and parcel (KEP) service provider, by its own account, is to advance the mobility transition and, together with ONO, make the "last mile" more efficient, lower in emissions, and more cost-effective. The quality of the vehicle and the Vehicle-as-a-Service offered by the Berlin provider, which among other things includes maintenance, comprehensive insurance, and access to battery exchange stations, have proven to be a decisive advantage in regular delivery from the perspective of the KEP logistician, according to the rationale provided.
“With the acquisition of 50 new ONO cargo bikes, we can further expand our e-vehicle fleet. This brings us one step closer to our goal of supplying 23 German metropolitan cities with low-emission parcels," explained Gerd Seber, Group Manager City Logistics and Sustainability.
Good experiences have been made with the cargo bikes used by the company so far; they have proven their worth in everyday delivery and have also met with satisfaction from the delivery experts, Seber further reports. The financing of the new ONOs is being provided by the financial services company Mercator-Leasing from Schweinfurt.
“To meet the Paris climate goals, the e-cargo bike fleet in Germany must be quickly and significantly expanded. The decision to build a sustainable last mile is a strong signal for the entire industry and society. DPD's trust in our cargo bikes is proof of the quality of our products and our services," said Mathias Drews, Key Account Manager for the KEP sector at ONOMOTION.
The agreement to order additional e-cargo bikes builds on a one-year pilot project. Residential areas in the Prenzlauer Berg district, among others, within a radius of around five kilometers from a micro depot in the capital Berlin were supplied emission-free with two of the two-wheeled e-cargo bikes equipped with standardized swap boxes.
