On-Demand Höxter: Success Model "Holibri" Remains in Service

Even after the North Rhine-Westphalia funding expires at the end of next year, the service will continue. The financing will then be taken over by the city of Höxter.

The electric on-demand transit service "Holibri," which has replaced the less frequently used bus lines HX1, HX2, HX3, and HX5 in Höxter since December 6, 2021, has established itself so well that its success story will continue even after the end of the three-year project period funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and will be conceptually further developed within the district of the medium-sized town in North Rhine-Westphalia. The on-demand shuttle service "Holibri" of the Paderborn/Höxter Public Transport Association (nph) has been successfully operating throughout the entire city of Höxter since December 6, 2021, and the service is well established. The encouraging passenger numbers reflect this – in the past nearly two years, almost 120,000 passengers have used the deployed barrier-free electric vans of the Mercedes-Benz EQV 300 model, which replace the less frequented bus lines HX1, HX2, HX3, and HX5.

City takes over the financing

Currently and until November 30, 2024, financing is secured through funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, after which the city will take over. Already in September 2023, the council in Höxter had decided to continue the on-demand service even after the end of the funding and project period. The nph Association Assembly also agreed with this – it is also planned to further develop the concept in the Höxter district.

“We had high hopes that the Association Assembly would decide to continue Holibri because it is a forward-looking model for public transport. Now we can share the good news with the people of Höxter that Holibri will continue to be available for them,” say nph Managing Director Marcus Klugmann and his team.

Sensible addition to public transport – especially in rural areas

Meanwhile, there are many on-demand projects throughout Germany that focus particularly on rural areas. However, so far, only a few initiatives have managed to establish themselves beyond the funding period. Here, the success story of "Holibri" has exemplary character and can serve as a positive example for other municipalities that want to modernize and restructure their local public transport, especially in rural areas, according to nph.
