The Kempten-based cleantech company Numbat and the family-run gas station company PM Pfennings Mobility have taken another step toward expanding the fast-charging network by setting up HPC charging systems at more than 70 gas station locations. Many of the planned installations are expected to be completed as early as 2023. PM Pfennings Mobility, which has a strong presence in the Ruhr area, sees itself as a pioneer for modern and everyday-suitable fast charging at gas stations.

With the combination of ultra-fast charging station and battery storage, E-cars can be charged ultra-fast and efficiently. Equipped with two charging points, the system can fast-charge E-cars with a charging power of up to 300 kW. When both charging points are used simultaneously, it can deliver up to 150 kW. Additionally, the integrated battery storage with a capacity of 200 kWh ensures sustainable energy management at the stations.

Avoiding peak loads, optimizing self-consumption

Thanks to the additional battery function, peak loads can be avoided, self-consumption optimized, and costs reduced, according to the Allgäu-based company. Connection power plays no role due to the battery storage, making a connection to the low-voltage network sufficient. Long waiting times for transformers for transformer stations and costly construction measures for a connection to the medium voltage network can thus be avoided, allowing for quick and easy installation.

Photovoltaics can be connected at Pfennings

Another advantage of the battery storage is the possibility of connecting it to the in-house photovoltaic systems already existing at many Pfennings locations. This way, self-generated solar power can be stored and used either for fast charging or for the gas station operation.

"Numbat has convinced us as an ideal addition and holistic solution for our gas stations. The system meets the needs of our customers with the fast-charging offer. At the same time, Numbat offers us a comprehensive energy concept with its combined battery storage, allowing us to optimize power consumption at PM Pfennings Mobility stations," explains Josef Busch, Managing Director of Fred Pfennings GmbH & Co. KG.

Martin Schall, Co-Founder/Managing Director of Numbat GmbH sees the cooperation as another significant step. Through this collaboration, the widespread expansion of the fast-charging infrastructure in Germany can proceed further.

"The fast-charging offer at gas stations makes a rethinking in the industry visible. With more and more E-car drivers, e-mobility is finding access to optimal locations," Schall continues.

Up to 600 fast-charging stations will be installed in 2023. In addition to the gas station chain of PM Pfennings Mobility, car dealerships and retailers are also relying on the economical and holistic product combination of the cleantech company.
