November: Registrations of electric and hybrid cars significantly decreased
Stronger than the overall market for new registrations in Germany, the share of electrified vehicles decreased in November. While the total numbers according to KBA and VDA compared to the same month last year only dropped by 6% to 245,700 units, the decline for electric vehicles was 39% (63,070). Hybrids, in particular, sold significantly worse (–59%, 18,120). But losses were also recorded for fully electric vehicles (–22%, 44,940).
E-cars: 18% share of the overall market
Calculated over the whole year, the new registrations of electrified vehicles slipped into the negative with –5% compared to the same period last year (627,700). However, this results solely from the reduced sales of hybrid vehicles (–46%, 157,800), while fully electric counterparts continue to remain in the positive with a growth of 28% to 469,600 units. They thus hold a share of 18% of all registrations in Germany throughout the year. Including hybrids, electrified vehicles have so far accounted for 24.1% of the market share in 2023.
Background
At the end of last year, there was a high number of early new registrations as a result of the announcement of the reduction of the environmental bonus for purely battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and the complete phase-out for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), in order to still benefit from the subsidy. Due to the correspondingly high comparison values from the previous year, new registrations in the past month declined significantly.
