Norway: Bergen deploys first Solaris trolleybuses
The Norwegian transport operator Keolis Norge AS has ordered a total of ten Solaris Trollino 18 to strengthen its fleet in Bergen, Norway. The articulated trolleybuses are to be used from December this year on Bergen's 7.5 km long trolleybus route. The articulated trolleys are powered by an electric motor with a power output of 240 kW. Additionally on board are traction batteries with a capacity of 55 kWh, which according to the manufacturer, provide a range of 11 km without an overhead line connection. The batteries are charged during the drive (In-Motion-Charging) via the pantographs mounted on the vehicle.
The Solaris articulated trolleys are perfectly adapted to the prevailing climatic conditions of the Scandinavian country. For instance, a special insulation package ensures thermal comfort and, according to the Polish bus manufacturer, also scores points with lower energy consumption in sub-zero temperatures. This includes additional insulation of the side walls, ceiling, and chassis in the area of the wheelhouses as well as double-glazed side windows. Furthermore, the vehicles are also designed to accommodate the fitting of snow chains.
Lots of Space and Comfort in the Interior
42 seats equipped with safety belts are available inside the Trollino 18 for passengers – ten of them are accessible step-free for passengers with disabilities. Additionally, a seat has been installed directly behind the driver's cabin, providing sufficient space for visually impaired passengers traveling with a guide dog. For wheelchair users and people with strollers, there are two spaces with securing straps. A ramp is built into the second door as an entry aid.
Furthermore, the articulated trolleybuses are equipped with air conditioning for the driver's cabin and the passenger area, a passenger information system with two displays including stop announcements. Security is ensured by a video camera system that monitors the vehicle's interior and door areas, a reversing camera, and a camera for monitoring the pantograph. The comprehensive safety features are completed by an alcohol interlock, which checks the sobriety of the driver before the engine starts. At the doors, which are installed in the 2+2+2+2 door configuration, passenger counting sensors have been installed. The Solaris trolleybuses are fully low-floor and have a kneeling function, which allows the right side of the vehicle to be lowered by an additional 7 cm during a stop at a bus stop.
