Nissan Ariya Extreme – Pole to Pole Electric Expedition

Under arctic conditions, the Pole to Pole expedition team and Nissan have unveiled an adventure-ready version of the new Ariya electric SUV, which will undertake a 27,000 km journey from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole.

Unchanged E-Drive

The modifications to the vehicle were deliberately kept minimal, with no changes to the battery or the drivetrain. However, the most noticeable difference is the adjustment of the suspension and the additional 39-inch tires. Combined with e-4ORCE, Nissan's electric all-wheel drive technology, these modifications are intended to enable the expedition vehicle to tackle extreme terrain while giving the Pole-to-Pole drivers Chris and Julie Ramsey the necessary comfort and control to reach the South Pole.

“One of the things underpinning all our adventures is that we take a production electric car and make only minimal modifications to demonstrate its real, everyday capabilities, no matter where you drive it,” explains Chris Ramsey, Pole to Pole EV expedition leader. “With our Nissan Ariya, it's no different, as the vehicle’s powertrain and battery have not been altered, showcasing how capable and versatile the production Ariya is. We modified the suspension and widened the wheel arches to benefit from the stable platform and support from the 39-inch BF Goodrich tires. I am incredibly excited to get behind the wheel of an already brilliant vehicle that now also feels prepared to conquer the ends of the earth in style!”

Integrated Espresso Machine

As a self-confessed coffee lover, Chris will have access to a specially integrated espresso machine with a good supply of sustainable coffee. While the on-demand caffeine will help him focus on the long and remote sections of the journey, Chris can also capture the beauty of this spectacular environment with a drone, which can be launched directly from the supply unit on the roof. Another innovation is the portable, renewable energy unit that will charge the Ariya in the polar regions. The towable prototype consists of a packable, lightweight wind turbine and solar cells, which, in strong wind and long daylight, will charge the vehicle's battery when Chris and Julie take a break.

"The planning and preparation for Pole to Pole has taken up a big part of our lives over the past four years, and I am really looking forward to starting the expedition in March," comments Julie Ramsey, co-driver for Pole to Pole. "We will discover so many interesting initiatives by communities and individuals that are taking positive action against climate change, and I am excited to share these experiences and stories with everyone. We are doing something that has never been attempted before, a world premiere, and that ultimately makes it so exciting."

What does that mean?

E-mobility in extreme use. Already a hundred years ago, the first motorists sought the challenge and embarked on adventurous expeditions with their combustion engine boxes. It will be exciting to see how the power generation prototype with wind turbine and solar panels performs in practice - otherwise, the Ariya will run out of power very quickly.
