Nissan and Honda are considering a merger – Mitsubishi is also expected to be involved
The two Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan are reportedly planning to discuss a possible merger in response to the intense global competition in electric vehicles. According to the Japanese business newspaper "Nikkei," citing informed sources, the second and third largest companies in the sector are considering establishing a holding company for this purpose, which would also involve Mitsubishi Motors. The two corporations only stated that they are considering various options for future cooperation, but no decisions have been made yet.
Together, they would form the world's third-largest car manufacturer with sales of more than eight million vehicles, approaching Toyota and Volkswagen. The Japanese automakers aim to pool their resources to better compete against Tesla and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers in a rapidly changing automotive industry, the report said. Nissan's stock, as the largest shareholder in Mitsubishi Motors, surged significantly in response to the alleged merger plans.
