Nio is also considered a not quite inexpensive premium brand in China, which keeps the numbers in check. That's why they are now launching "Onvo": positioned as more affordable and family-friendly. The L60 is intended to compete with the Tesla Model Y – even more so, as according to CNV Post, many Tesla store managers have been poached in China for the Onvo hubs.

The technology is state-of-the-art, meaning: The Onvo L60 uses a 900-volt architecture. On the other hand, they remain modest with the batteries: The basic battery pack has a capacity of 60 kWh and allows a CLTC range of 555 kilometers, although realistically it will be more like 300. The long-range version boasts 85 kWh and offers a CLTC range of 730 kilometers; realistically, we expect 400 to 450.

Briefly on the performance: The single-motor variant with rear-wheel drive has a peak power of 240 kW and a maximum torque of 305 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The dual-motor variant has a combined peak power of 340 kW and a peak torque of 440 Nm. It is said to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Optically, the Onvo does not differ significantly from the Nio models: it also offers a lot of space inside, clean craftsmanship, and a very minimalist design. One has to question where the customer has to make big compromises. The positive answer: in the price!

Because the Onvo L60 starts in China, including the battery, from 206,900 Yuan (that's just around 26,000 Euros). The Tesla Model Y currently starts there from 249,900 Yuan (around 32,000 Euros), and the ET only from 298,000 Yuan (almost 38,000 Euros). Optionally, the Onvo L60 can also be purchased without a battery for prices starting at 149,900 Yuan (around 19,000 Euros). Depending on the size of the battery, it can then be rented from 599 Yuan (around 75 Euros) per month.

Nio aims to deliver around 20,000 units in the currently rather weak Chinese market by 2024. In the long term, they want to sell 20,000 units per month, which would be 240,000 Onvo per year.

What does this mean?

Although Nio is more successful in China than in Europe, the major breakthrough has not yet occurred. This is why the "mass-market" brand Onvo is now supposed to change things. However, at least visually, it demands very few compromises, is well and affordably positioned, and is likely to make life even harder for Nio itself.
