Nio: Cooperation with FreeNow creates special conditions for taxis
The Chinese automotive group Nio, which entered the taxi market earlier this year with its premium sedan, and FreeNow, the mobility app claiming to have the largest vehicle selection in all of Europe, plan to collaborate in the future. To further promote zero-emission mobility, Nio will support taxi companies in Germany in expanding their electric fleets starting early 2024, including in Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich. FreeNow, in turn, promotes sustainable mobility through incentives, discounts, and subsidies for taxi companies. An increasing number of users consciously choose electric taxis within the FreeNow app, highlighting the growing demand for environmentally friendly transport solutions. The aim of the strategic partnership is to promote zero-emission and sustainable passenger transport.

Special conditions for taxi companies
Through the partnership of Nio and FreeNow, taxi companies that choose a model from Nio and are simultaneously FreeNow partners receive special conditions and benefits from both companies. So far, the premium sedan Nio ET7 and the mid-size sedan Nio ET5 are available for conversion to taxi vehicles. Current delivery times with conversion by a Nio certified partner are from six weeks.

Through joint events, including regional test drives and information events, Nio and FreeNow are making electromobility more accessible to taxi companies. The kick-off event took place in Hamburg.
“The switch to emission-free e-taxis in Hamburg is in full swing, which has already saved almost 9,000 tons of CO2 to date,” explains Dirk Ritter, head of the traffic industry supervision at the Hamburg Authority for Transport and Mobility Change. “We welcome the partnership of Nio and FreeNow, which makes it easier for taxi companies and their passengers to switch to the mobility of tomorrow today.”
The Hanseatic city is among the cities with the highest proportion of electrically operated rides on the FreeNow platform: More than 600 of the approximately 3,000 taxis in Hamburg are currently electric vehicles. Over 85 percent of them are available through FreeNow.

As part of Hamburg’s E-Taxi initiative “Project Future Taxi,” ten Nio ET7 taxis are currently on the streets of Hamburg. According to Maier, Nio models are particularly attractive for Hamburg taxi companies because a municipal Power Swap Station (PSS) is planned in the Hanseatic city, similar to the one that opened in Berlin at the beginning of July. At the planned PSS near the airport, taxi drivers could then automatically swap their empty Nio E-Taxi battery for a charged one in just about three minutes.
“The eco-friendly and innovative Nio vehicles are a real advancement in the taxi sector. We welcome applications from motivated drivers who want to drive the mobility transition forward with us and FreeNow,” says Hamburg taxi operator Fezan Rana, who has already integrated ten Nio taxis into his fleet.
