Nikola Tre: With PlusDrive Towards Autonomous Driving
On February 23, 2023, Nikola Corporation, a provider of zero-emission transportation and energy supply and infrastructure solutions, announced that it has selected PlusDrive, the next-generation safety system developed by Plus, for the Nikola Tre BEV battery-electric truck and the Nikola Tre FCEV hydrogen-electric truck in the USA. The first factory-installed Nikola Tre BEVs and hydrogen-electric vehicles equipped with the extended driver assistance features of PlusDrive will be available from the end of 2024.

Pilot instead of driver
PlusDrive was developed by drivers for drivers and offers safety, fuel efficiency, and driving comfort features. PlusDrive extends the role of the professional driver to that of a pilot who monitors the system during the ride. The system's capabilities go beyond basic driver assistance functions such as lane keeping and automatic emergency braking. PlusDrive also takes care of lane changes - even during lane merging, lane-centered driving, speed adjustments in stop-and-go traffic, and maintaining distance from the vehicle ahead. New driver assistance features are continuously added through the over-the-air interface without the truck needing any downtime.
Better traffic flow, fewer accidents
Together with Nikola's base technology, PlusDrive can optimally adjust the truck's speed in anticipation and adapt it to traffic flow while taking advantage of regenerative braking in congested or slow-moving traffic. With PlusDrive and the support of cameras, short-range radar, and LiDAR, the driver is to be assisted in safely interacting with other drivers and avoiding accidents.
More Safety for Cyclists and Pedestrians
Away from the highway, the system alerts the driver to obstacles as well as other road users, including motorcycles and pedestrians, and informs them of their position relative to the vehicle (blind spot function). The system operates in all traffic situations, including at loading ramps. The safety of pedestrians and cyclists near electric trucks is particularly important because emissions-free vehicles often produce less driving noise and may not be immediately noticed. The driver assistance system also operates while stationary to ensure safety during loading and unloading, as well as during electric charging and refueling. Charging with high currents and refueling with hydrogen is monitored by additional detection and capture functions.

Nikola PlusDrive-Enabled Trucks in Fleet Testing
Several fleets, including PGT Trucking and Christenson Transportation, will test the first Nikola PlusDrive-enabled trucks, which will be available from the end of 2023.
