New registrations in September 2021: Tesla Model 3 nearly as strong as VW Golf!
It was an unusual September: With 6,886 units, only 58 more Golfs were newly registered than the Tesla Model 3 with 6,828 units. This is because Tesla likes to deliver based on quarters - and the third quarter ended in late September. Meanwhile, VW has problems with chips and must accordingly throttle Golf production.
The Fiat 500 also works very well electrically
Which brings us to the cause of further major shifts in new registrations: In many vehicle classes, the best-selling car in September changed. The Fiat 500 took the top position among microcars, ranking fourth overall. The Opel Corsa was the third most frequently newly registered small car - the most popular mid-range model was, of course, the Tesla Model 3. Bad news for Benz: The C-Class did not appear among the top 50, and in the upper mid-range, the BMW 5 Series took the lead.
Luxury class: Taycan instead of S-Class
In the luxury class, electric cars are also popular: Here, the Porsche Taycan took the crown. It was different for sports cars, where the Porsche 911 moved to the front. In the mini-vans, the Peugeot 3008 took the lead, and in the large vans, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class.
In the remaining five segments, the top-selling models from the previous month remained: VW Golf (compact class), VW T-Roc (SUV), VW Tiguan (off-road vehicles), and VW T6.1 (utilities) as well as Fiat Ducato (base vehicle motorhomes).
The most popular electric car in September was the Tesla Model 3, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC led among plug-in hybrids. The Toyota Mirai was once again the top-selling fuel cell vehicle, while the Toyota Corolla was the most successful full-hybrid model on the German market. The most popular vehicle with liquefied or natural gas was the Dacia Sandero Eco-G.
What does it mean?
Chip shortages and the electric boom are causing wild fluctuations in registration numbers: No one would have thought it possible that Tesla would come so close to the VW Golf with the Model 3. But by October, all of this could change again.
