MVG plans on-demand service Mija in Munich starting from 2025

Mija san Mija: With a somewhat cryptic name, Munich is planning to set up an on-demand service, under the consultancy of Hamburg-based VW subsidiary MOIA, which is expected to supplement public transportation primarily during evening and night hours starting in 2025. In the long term, the use of autonomously driving shuttles is also planned.

The capital of Bavaria, Munich, plans to establish an on-demand service starting in 2025 to complement the public transport network with flexible ride services, prospectively also with autonomous shuttles. In its last session, the Mobility Committee of the city council governed by the Green-Red coalition decided on the new on-demand service MIJA in the capital. This is expected to become available to Munich residents in the second half of 2025 as a new and flexible mobility offering that operates entirely on the needs of the passengers without a fixed schedule or route. If the city council approves it in the full assembly, MVG must carry out the necessary tenders. With the service, they aim to attract new target groups who currently do not or rarely use public transport, thereby advancing the traffic transition and prospectively incorporating autonomous shuttles, announced MVG CEO Ingo Wortmann.

Boarding and alighting will occur after booking through the MVGO app at one of the numerous virtual stops, which will be found approximately every 350 meters throughout the service area. The on-demand service will start as evening and night transport and will complement the existing line service. By 2028, the service is to be gradually expanded to 100 vehicles at a cost of 50 million euros and then be available almost around the clock. However, the new on-demand service will not be integrated into the public transport tariff. For customers who hold a valid public transport ticket in Munich, there will be discounts. The amount to be paid for the ride will already be displayed in the app before booking and will not change during the ride, according to the plan.

The partially disability-friendly service, specifically aimed at elderly people, will initially be set up in the districts of Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied, Allach-Untermenzing, Pasing-Obermenzing, Moosach, Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Schwabing-West, Maxvorstadt, Schwanthalerhöhe, Ludwigsvorstadt, Isarvorstadt, and Altstadt-Lehel. Customers can book one of the fully electric vehicles via the MVG’s mobility app MVGO if needed.

Supplementing, not replacing public transport

With on-demand mobility, the aim is to enhance public transportation with a new offering, according to the responsible mobility department of the City of Munich. With specific characteristics such as comfort, availability, and flexibility, the new on-demand services complement the existing scheduled services and thus enhance the overall attractiveness of public transport. Between 2018 and 2020, MVG already tested on-demand mobility in the city with the "IsarTiger" in a pilot project. Building on the experiences from this trial, a project consortium consisting of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the consulting firm digital mobilities consultants (dmo), and the ride-pooling provider MOIA, under the leadership of the Munich mobility department, has spent the past few months developing an operational and financial concept for on-demand transport in the state capital Munich. MVG, as the responsible operator of the new service, was closely involved in the conception.
