Münster: Third e-bus line starting this fall

From autumn, passengers will also be traveling electrically on line 8 – the necessary charging station for operation has just been installed in the Coerde district. The Münster electric buses are powered by green electricity.

Approximately 50 tons is the weight of the charging station that has now been set up at the bus turnaround in Coerde. Here, the electric buses on line 8 will be refueled with green electricity in the future. (Photo: Stadtwerke Münster)

The charging station for the electrified bus operation on Münster's Line 8 between Coerde and Wolbeck is already set up. The approximately 50-ton station contains transformers and electronics for connection to the medium-voltage power grid. Cable work and the erection of the two charging masts are still needed so that the electric buses can charge with green electricity. According to the plan, the electrification of the third bus line in Münster is to be completed by autumn.

"Promoting the mobility transition is one of our contributions to slowing down climate change. For this, we are working on many fronts simultaneously: We are expanding the infrastructure for electromobility as here in Coerde, increasing our e-bus fleet year by year, and strengthening public transport with denser schedules, new connections, and offerings such as LOOPmünster," says Frank Gäfgen, Managing Director of Mobility at Stadtwerke.

Expansion of the e-bus fleet progresses

Of the 125 Stadtwerke buses, 23 are already electric – according to current planning, this number should exceed 40 by next year. And by 2029, the entire Stadtwerke Münster fleet is to be converted to electric buses.

Additionally, the municipal company offers support to its medium-sized partners, who operate on urban lines on behalf of Stadtwerke, in the introduction and operation of e-buses.

Stadtwerke is investing around 800,000 euros in the new charging station, 90% of which is funded by the City of Münster and the Public Transport Westphalia-Lippe (NWL). The NWL funds come from the funding pool of the Ministry of Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

What does this mean?

In addition to the e-buses, the expansion of their infrastructure has also started and is becoming a well-planned routine for many municipalities.
