Movelo expects a further e-bike boom in corporate mobility in 2023.
The use of e-bikes in corporate mobility is expected to continue to increase, according to movelo, a specialist in corporate bike subscriptions. Currently, nearly 8.5 million e-bikes are registered in Germany, and more and more of them are being used for business trips.
"Especially in urban areas, electric bicycles prove to be a sustainable, time- and cost-saving alternative to other motorized means of transportation. We see this alternative increasingly establishing itself by the rising demand for our mobility solutions across Europe," explains Herbert Ottenschläger from the mobility service provider movelo, which specializes in renting e-bike fleets for corporate use.
In seven countries, around 6,000 movelo e-bikes are already in use. By 2023, that number is expected to reach 8,000. Both in public perception and in terms of acceptance in practice, e-bikes have undergone a significant transformation over the past decade. The power assistance, which was often mocked in the past and used only in hilly terrain, has cleared the way for a range of other advantages, especially evident in urban areas. Electric bicycles cover short distances in city traffic in record time, eliminate the need to search for parking spaces, require little maintenance, and are emissions-free, highlighting their benefits. The potential for corporate mobility was recognized by the provider as early as 2016, making them the first in the German-speaking area to rent e-bike fleets to companies.
"The requirements for e-bikes used in business are, of course, different from those for private use. For example, our solutions always include regular on-site servicing directly with our customers. This ensures the availability of the e-bikes and prevents breakdowns as much as possible through maintenance checks," explains Herbert Ottenschläger, Head of Sales at movelo.
Sustainability is another key topic for movelo, according to Ottenschläger. However, it is not just about emissions-free transportation – "On behalf of our customers, we also plant trees for the miles cycled, which positively affects the CO₂ balance of the respective companies." The demand for movelo's fleets continues to grow steadily across Europe.
Further Expansion Abroad
After Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium, last year saw expansion into Italy and the Czech Republic. Around 6,000 movelo bikes were already in use in 2022, with over 9.6 million kilometers covered on them so far, over 26,000 trees planted, and more than 13,000 tons of CO₂ stored. Currently, the movelo app, which is used to unlock and reserve the company's e-bikes, records exactly 33,143 users. The movelo team itself has also grown and now comprises more than 60 so-called "Movelists."
More E-Vehicles, More Cargo, Less CO₂
Herbert Ottenschläger forecasts further growth for 2023. This is only marginally related to the ongoing hype surrounding (electric) bicycles, says the founder.
"E-bikes are increasingly establishing themselves as primary vehicles used for almost all errands in both private and professional daily life, not just when the weather is great or the tram is overcrowded," predicts the company chief.
Fleet plans for more than 50 new customers are already in talks for the coming year. By the end of 2023, Ottenschläger forecasts, there will likely be 8,000 corporate e-bikes on European roads, about a third more than now.
"Germany remains our largest growth market, but 600 e-bikes are also planned for Italy and the Czech Republic, where we have just celebrated our market launch. Additionally, we are expanding our portfolio to include e-scooters and building up our cargo segment, meaning more cargo bikes will be available than before," the visionary continues.
The provider also aims to further improve sustainability. The company has been climate-neutral since 2016 and has now committed to reducing the CO₂ footprint per employee by 55 percent by 2030. "Additionally, we will implement three projects to optimize our supply chains for sustainability. We will specifically focus on issues such as packaging material and battery efficiency regarding longevity," explains Herbert Ottenschläger in conclusion, adding, "Corporate mobility with bikes continues to gain momentum!"
