In Germany, more and more cars are being stolen. According to a report from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) on vehicle-related crime, 15,924 cars were stolen last year. This is nine percent more than in 2022. In addition to theft, there is also embezzlement – for example, when leased vehicles are not returned. These account for 17.8 percent of the stolen vehicles. The proportion increased by 18.6 percent, reaching the highest level in the last five years.

Motorhomes remain attractive

The number of stolen trucks increased by 48 percent in 2023 to more than 1,000 cases. “This is particularly due to a series of thefts of small trucks in Berlin,” the BKA notes. With 469, the number of stolen motorhomes remains almost unchanged – despite a significant increase in their registrations. “Due to the high profit potential, motorhomes are likely to remain a focus for internationally operating criminal groups,” explains the BKA.

Division of labor in organized groups

The number of registered suspects increased by 10.2 percent to 19,660 last year. "A large part of the perpetrators are active in organized groups," states the situation report. They divide theft, trade, and transport among themselves. "Eastern Europe remains an important target and transit region for international vehicle displacement," the investigators report. Turkey is the most important transit country for vehicles destined for the Near and Middle East. "The United Arab Emirates in particular holds significant importance as a sales market for high-quality vehicles and vehicle parts stolen in Germany," writes the BKA in the situation report.

The new tricks of the thieves

The police increasingly observe that traveling groups of offenders break into homes, steal vehicle keys, and then steal the corresponding car. Alternatively, they resort to technical aids. These include, for example, so-called radio range extenders, which allow vehicles to be unlocked from a greater distance.
