Mini launches limited edition Cooper SE Convertible

Convertibles have been in decline for years, but are currently becoming more popular again: Many manufacturers have presented prototypes that are soon to go into production – and after Mini experimentally put an electric convertible on the road, it is now coming in at least a limited edition of 999 units.

Why not right away? The technology is available, and the feedback on the electric one-off in summer 2022 was predictably significant! Now Mini is launching a cautious small series of the fully electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible, which is expected to consume 17.2 kWh/100 km according to WLTP.

Starting from April 2023, the Mini Cooper SE Convertible in Europe will be available in a limited quantity of 999 vehicles – and will cost a hefty 60,000 euros – that's approximately 50,420 euros net! Stefanie Wurst, Head of the Mini brand, is delighted:

“Three years ago, we brought the fully electric Mini Cooper SE to the market, and today, every fifth Mini sold in Europe is fully electric. This success has inspired us to implement the small series of the Mini Cooper SE Convertible within a few months. I am pleased that we can offer 999 Mini customers an extraordinary and exclusive open-air go-kart feeling.”

Up to 201 kilometers range according to WLTP

With a length of 3,863 mm, a wheelbase of 2,495 mm, a width of 1,727 mm, and a length of 2,495 mm, the dimensions, including the 160-liter trunk capacity, remain unchanged compared to the conventionally powered Mini Convertibles. The 135 kW/184 PS electric motor comes from Dingolfing and Landshut. It should reach 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, and with the test cycle WLTP determined consumption of 17.2 kWh/100 km, Mini promises a range of up to 201 kilometers – realistically, under unfavorable conditions, more likely around 150 kilometers plus/minus x.

New: wheels made of 100 percent secondary aluminum

According to Mini, it takes a pioneering role in the specific editions of the light alloy wheels. The 17“ light alloy wheels in Electric Power Spoke 2-tone design are made from 100% secondary aluminum. By combining green electricity in production and using secondary raw materials, CO2 emissions can be significantly reduced compared to conventional manufacturing processes.

All essential information is summarized on the MINI Head-Up Display during the drive. On longer journeys, among other things, the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and the MINI Driving Assistant increase the comfort of the limited MINI Convertible with a fully electric drive as standard.

The Cooper SE Convertible is available in Enigmatic Black and White Silver colors. Door handles, side scuttles, as well as the trim of the front and rear lights are in Resolute Bronze color. Appropriately, the logos and the model lettering are in elegant Piano Black. The E-logo known from the Cooper SE is found on the front apron and rear, emphasizing the locally emission-free driving fun in the design. Furthermore, Mini adds more specific edition equipment details.

Inside too, the convertibles are lavishly outfitted to justify the price – with premium leather and high-quality Piano Black surfaces that can be stylishly accentuated by the ambient lighting. The interior design highlights the fully electric character of the open four-seater with yellow color accents, such as the yellow Start/Stop toggle switch.

Up to 30 km/h, the fully electrically driven and thus particularly quiet textile roof in the MINI Yours style with the typical Union Jack pattern can be opened, closed, or adjusted as a sunroof.

The Cooper SE Cabrio is produced in a limited edition of 999 vehicles, alongside the conventional MINI Cabrio, in the Netherlands. Pricewise, there will definitely be a four in front, making it the only thing that isn't small about the Mini Cabrio.

What does that mean?

BMW remains cautious with the Mini Cabrio and is testing the waters to see how popular a Cooper SE Cabrio could be. We claim: It will be extremely popular – and we wonder why Mini hasn't long since elevated it to the standard range – because there are practically no mass-produced fully electric convertibles yet. It's just a pity that in this case, being very cautious also means being very expensive...
