MHC Mobility Survey: Company Car is Out, Flexible Mobility in Trend

The Europe-wide mobility service provider views the traditional company car with a leasing contract as an outdated model and sees a trend towards more flexibility in a survey. A versatile mobility budget is also highly favored among company car owners.

A new survey by MHC Mobility, a Europe-wide mobility service provider for sustainable and manufacturer-independent mobility solutions, shows: The traditional 24-month lease agreement is outdated. Employees are demanding more flexibility and customized mobility solutions. The representative nationwide survey (n=1000) highlights that private usage options, low costs, and flexible vehicle choice are crucial for employees. "Our customers are increasingly demanding more flexibility. They no longer want to be tied to rigid contracts but want to be able to switch their vehicle depending on their needs and situation," explains Johann Goldenstein, Commercial Director at MHC Mobility Germany. "This is precisely the flexibility we offer with our MHC Mobility offering. Our customers can choose between different vehicle models and terms at any time, allowing them to customize their mobility package individually."

Flexibility plays a central role in vehicle choice

The survey results clearly show that flexibility in vehicle choice plays a central role. 47% of respondents emphasized the importance of flexible access to various vehicle types depending on their life situation, be it a small car for singles, a station wagon for families, or an electric car for the city. Additionally, 33% place great value on shorter contract terms. This development shows that employees no longer want to be tied to lengthy contracts and appreciate the freedom to adapt their vehicle choice to current needs. Particularly notable is the preference for shorter usage periods: Nearly 40% of respondents with a company car prefer contract terms of 12 months or less. This underscores the desire for more frequent replacement options and greater adaptability.

"The demand for flexible and individually customizable vehicle solutions is unmistakable. We need to move away from rigid leasing contracts and offer employees more freedom in the use of their company cars," Goldenstein continues. "With our FlexiRent offering, we are ahead of our competitors. The contract term starts at just one month, adjustments can be made at any time, and the vehicles are available immediately. Our customers receive a tailor-made mobility package with maximum flexibility."

An interesting demographic difference also emerges: Younger employees under 30 years of age place particular importance on flexible vehicle choice (51%) and shorter contract terms (38%), whereas older respondents over 50 years of age prioritize these aspects less. Regional differences are also evident across federal states. For instance, the desire for flexible vehicle types is particularly high in Bavaria at 52%, while shorter contract terms are preferred by 35% of respondents in North Rhine-Westphalia. Company car owners have a significantly more positive attitude towards a mobility budget, which allows for the flexible use of various means of transport, compared to the entire sample. 74% of company car owners support such a budget, compared to 49% of all respondents.

“A mobility budget offers enormous flexibility and enables employees to choose the best mobility solution for them, whether it be a car, a bicycle or public transport,” explains Goldenstein. “For the time being, we are still focusing on our core business of cars and commercial vehicles, but we are not ruling out new offerings. We need to remain flexible; there is too much movement in the mobility market.”
