MG is still considered a sports car brand, even if today's program primarily includes reliable electric SUVs and station wagons that no longer come from Longbridge or even Abingdon, but are produced by the Chinese vehicle manufacturer SAIC. MG is now also active again in Germany, where they aim to have a dense dealer network with up to 100 operations knitted together by the end of the year.

In Shanghai, the Cyberster, a roadster concept car with an intelligent electric drive system, has now been unveiled. This system is expected to provide acceleration from zero to hundred kilometers per hour in under three seconds or enable the car to travel up to 800 kilometers. MG also refers to advanced self-driving technology at Level 3. Carl Gotham, Director of the SAIC Design Center in London, explains:

"The Cyberster is a bold statement looking into the future of MG. It showcases our heritage, but more importantly, our cutting-edge technology and advanced design."

As a Briton, Gotham still feels connected to the brand’s roots and adds:

"Sports cars are the lifeblood of MG's DNA, and the Cyberster is an enormously exciting concept for us."

The interior of the Cyberster is divided into two areas and tailored to the driver. The latter looks at a large display under the windshield, with two smaller screens and cameras taking over the function of rearview mirrors. Operation is via a large central touch panel. According to MG, an additional display to the right of the driver is intended to bring more driving fun – exactly how is not revealed.

Once again, with the Cyberster, MG is demonstrating sporty ambitions and is also considering the production of a possible new sports car, the company says. In 2024, it could become the new flagship for the brand's hundredth anniversary, but nothing has been decided yet.

What does that mean?

MG is now a Chinese manufacturer of electrified and purely electric everyday SUVs that do a decent job at an affordable price. This would correspond more to the brand "Morris," but not to the sporty offshoot "Morris Garages," which William Morris once founded as an offshoot like BMW "M" or "AMG." To ensure this image does not completely fade, the company occasionally constructs sporty showcars, such as the "E-Motion" Concept in 2017. It would be nice if these showcars, despite small numbers in the sports car segment, were once again followed by a genuine MG electric two-seater in series production.
